Sitting here on this sunny Saturday morning listening to Lee interviewing potential new superstars who would like to join our property detailing team. All new employees are put on an intensive 3 month in house training course when they join our team. This includes the standard stuff like COSHH, manual handling, working at height, ladder safety, driver awareness, green card CSCS and basic risk assessment adherence. We also train our team on every individual product and tool we use and every eventuality they can be used on (and there are a lot!!) We also train them on different surface types such as timber frame, upvc or even metal frame window fittings, standard windows, sash windows, leaded windows, velux windows, tiled floors, oak floors, LVT floors, laminate floors, and how to work on them depending on if they are treated or not…..The list really is non-exhaustive - and we look to learn new things every day. We call it the Broomsticks academy! We do not employ people with previous cleaning experience on purpose. This is the level of expertise you get when Broomsticks Housekeeping Services Ltd are appointed to “clean” your developments and projects. We are beyond normal, beyond basic and actually, cleaning is only 10% of what we do, the other 90% is property detailing - and this is where we turn your projects from a good finish, to its best finish. We do not let loose any untrained people on our projects, we certainly don’t let them do what they think is best. Professional Engineer and Professional Planner in the Sustainable Mobility and Community Building Space
In the spirit of ITE Canada ‘Career Connect’ I thought that I would take this posting for a ‘Project Manager, Active Transportation’ with the City of Kitchener and share some ideas that might help get an application noticed. These tips could apply to other jobs where there is a specific area of focus in a posting. First, whether you agree with cover letters or not, this kind of job needs more than a generic cover letter. Someone would need to show interest in a particular job and help demonstrate why they are qualified. If your current job is related but not exact (say construction engineer when this has a planning focus) then you would want to show why this particular job is of interest to you. And for those with no previous AT experience, there are ways to show an interest in related research or a general knowledge of applicable guidance. I would also recommend making use of other organizations such as Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP). What other tips would you share?

Recently, while pressure washing a high traffic area, I reflected on how to train employees to have a keen eye for necessary duties. Clean concrete may not be important to everyone, but to me, it showcases the level of willingness we take to ensure guests have the best possible experience. Neglecting basic housekeeping duties such as pressure washing, high dusting, and occasional touch-ups to the exterior can lead to questions about cleanliness. I strongly believe it's vital to take control of areas that need assistance, even if they're not the most appealing jobs. How many employees pass areas daily without noticing the tasks that need to be done? Let's encourage our teams to take pride in their work and to pay attention to the details that make a difference. By doing so, we can guarantee a high level of satisfaction for our guests and ensure that our facilities are always in top shape.

Additionally, regularly disposing of waste and debris not only keeps the site clean, but also prevents potential accidents. Secondly, implement a daily cleaning routine to keep the site tidy. This can include sweeping and mopping floors, wiping down surfaces, and organizing materials. I have been getting back into the swing of things after being off for about 10 days over the holidays. We are between projects right now, which is the time I usually devote to corporate housekeeping. One of the things I did yesterday was to go through some work I had done about 10 years ago. It was awful. I’m not feigning modesty; the video work in my old reel was truly abysmal. My images were lifeless, my backgrounds bland, attention to detail non-existent, and my overall presentation amateur. Bear in mind that by this point in my career I had already been shooting professional video, albeit not consistently, for almost 10 years. When I look at the work that my partner and I are putting out today, not only does it look an order of magnitude better, but I find it effortless to create it. So, even if you think you are sufficiently qualified - as I did - you might find that you are not sufficiently talented. Luckily talent can be developed through practice. If you’re lucky, as I was, someone will call you out, and make you examine your work with a more critical eye, which might spur you to self improve, as it did for me. Always strive to do better.
