Rolls-Royce is developing an innovative micro #nuclear #reactor designed to provide sustainable and flexible power solutions for both terrestrial and space applications. This Micro-Reactor is part of Rolls-Royce's broader nuclear portfolio, which also includes Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The Micro-Reactor is specifically designed to be compact, mobile, and capable of producing between 1 to 10 megawatts of power. The primary goal of the Micro-Reactor is to support the establishment and operation of lunar bases, providing essential power and heat for sustained human presence on the Moon. This initiative is backed by the UK Space Agency, which has invested £2.9 million into the project. Rolls-Royce aims to have a working prototype ready by 2029, with a full deployment expected by 2030. The Micro-Reactor has potential uses on Earth, such as providing power to remote communities, supporting defense operations, and contributing to net zero energy goals. The reactor's design allows it to operate independently of solar power and other environmental conditions, making it a versatile solution for various challenging environments. The specifics of how the fuel will be supplied and managed depend on the reactor's design and regulatory requirements.I am very concerned of how the fuel will be supplied, how long it will last and how the reactor will handle the waste. Texas-based Natura Resources announced some big news in mid-June: the NRC expects to complete the safety assessment and issue a construction permit by September 30th for the deployment of the Natura MSR-1 system. This puts the project - located at Abilene Christian University - on track to have the first NRC approved construction permit for a liquid-fueled molten salt reactor and only the second NRC approved construction permit for an advanced reactor of any kind. #nuclear #nuclearenergy #advancednuclear
