From Idea to Product: The Intricate Journey of Designing, Engineering, and Precision Manufacturing of Slot Die Heads. At every stage of the process, from initial design and engineering to flow simulation, structural analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), machining, grinding, lapping, quality gates have been implemented to ensure the quality and accuracy along the process chain. The process is strategically divided into segments to break down the complexity and avoid non-value-adding processes. O-I has started to produce glass from its Bowling Green, #Kentucky, #usa greenfield manufacturing facility. Glass began to flow at the facility in August, with full commissioning on track to be completed by the end of October. The facility is ramping up its use of O-I's second generation MAGMA #glass production #technology. Gordon Hardie, CEO of the world’s largest container glass #manufacturing company, said MAGMA had the potential to rewrite the company’s #business model. He said: “MAGMA's core technology works, the first generation melter development is complete. "We are ramping up production at our generation two greenfield Bowling Green site which is designed to test all it's operating qualities at full #industrial scale. “MAGMA’s increased flexibility has the potential to rewrite our business model but it must also deliver meaningful #economic profit in a reasonable time frame. “It is a challenge I have set to the MAGMA and commercial teams." He added the company intends to roll out its Ultra technology, which can reduce the weight of glass containers by up to 30% and can improve convenience, reduce #logistic costs and #greenhouse #gas #emissions. He later told analysts that the core of Magma technology is a furnace that can be switched on and off, which gives the company flexibility and allows it to deliver variability at a reasonable cost. “A traditional furnace needs long runs to be cost efficient but this gives us the capability to do premium, super premium, and ultra #premium on short runs and still make an economic profit.” #investment #sustainable #climateaction #solutions #environment

Pilkington Holding GmbH | NSG Group has set itself the goal of reducing CO2 emissions from its glass production and neutralizing them in the long term. Hydrogen as an energy source is a key component in this. 👍 In the UK, the NSG Group was the first glass manufacturer in the world to successfully carry out tests with hydrogen as a substitute for natural gas during ongoing production in 2021. At the Gladbeck site, where Pilkington manufactures flat glass for the construction and automotive industries on two production lines, the company is involved in a project to connect the glassworks to the hydrogen network. Instagrid charges ahead with ambitious battery storage plans Andreas Sedlmayr, co-founder and joint CEO of German battery storage manufacturer Instagrid wants to use consumer electronics technology to make battery storage solutions for construction rental equipment smaller and more portable. He tells Lucy Barnard about the company’s journey so far and his ambitious US expansion plans For Andreas Sedlmayr, co-founder and joint CEO of German battery storage manufacturer Instagrid, small is beautiful. The key difference, Sedlmayr says, between the battery storage solutions his company is manufacturing and those available elsewhere is size: Instagrid’s first product, the Instagrid One has a rated energy capacity of 2.1 kWh – enough to power a 230V welding machine for a full day’s work - with a weight of 20kg. Its largest unit, the Instagrid Move 200, which is currently still in development phase, has a rated energy capacity of 398 kWh and can power three 60kVA cranes and weighs 4,700kg. Sedlmayr studied materials science at Kahlsruher Institute of Technology before working for tookmaker Bosch where he manufactured small handheld battery devices. It was in this capacity that he started thinking about filling a gap in the market for power packs for tradespeople. HORN All Electric Furnaces HORN builds a wide variety of glass furnace types for its customers, ranging from the usual end fired furnace to the all electric melting furnace. Furnace selection depends on individual customer requirements and demands. In general all electric furnaces with a cold top are used typically for a production range of 5 – 80 t/d with the possibility given to increase the melting capacity up to 200 t/d (or even beyond that). For this furnace type energy is not supplied by means of fossil fuels, but exclusively by means of electric energy supplied by molybdenum electrodes. The energy consumption of all electric furnaces is lower than the one of fossil fired furnaces. This advantage is especially true for furnaces with small pull rates, making them even more cost efficient. Increasing costs for CO2 allowances can be a deciding factor for all electric furnaces despite higher costs for electric energy in the near future.
