☁️ Cloud Engineering (or Platform Engineering, call it what you like) is NOT DevOps Engineering. In the ever-evolving Technology industry, few job titles cause as much confusion as these two. I have so many recruiters messaging me for DevOps roles (I’m not interested anyway). Although the tech stacks on the job ads have cross overs, they’re different jobs/roles. 🔹 Cloud/Platform Engineers: specialised in automating the delivery of a secure, scalable Cloud architecture for a client 🔹 DevOps Engineers: specialised in automating the delivery of software, bridging the gap between software development and ops Now, let's tackle the main issues with these roles: 1️⃣ Recruiters often lack the technical know-how to discern the difference. They mainly focus on buzzwords like Terraform, Python, AWS, Azure, Linux, and so on to fill job slots. 2️⃣ Some companies throw around the wrong job titles, adding to the chaos and making job seekers scratch their heads. 3️⃣ To add more spice to the mix, certain companies, depending on their budget and size, mash both roles under a single job title. I’m interested in how many people currently looking for a new role or recently secured one found their job hunting process, considering the difficulties surrounding this topic at the moment. #CloudEngineering #DevOpsEngineering #DevOps #platformengineering

Unfortunately, a devops engineer as a role should not exist for DevOps to be implemented properly in an organisation. DevOps is not about automating software deployment pipelines..... it's all about Developers, Security, Operations etc working as one team and all the members owning what they have built and running it. (shock horror... even developers being on call or having access to prod !!!) The original ethos of what devops really is is being lost in the industry and it's just creating yet another silo to pass things through.

Thing is that modern software gets delivered in an automated cloud environment nowadays that needs tweaking as demand and requirements change, so seeing many platform engineering teams performing devops roles is not that uncommon.
