This news article (https://lnkd.in/gYHtXTiY) describes my presentation to the Victoria Transit Commission as president of Better Island Transit (https://lnkd.in/gqWpRtsH ) which advocates for more frequent and affordable bus service on Vancouver Island, particularly between Victoria and Nanaimo. The current service is terrible; only four daily buses between Victoria and Duncan on a route with 25,000 daily vehicle-trips. Local officials are supportive but this ultimately depends on the Ministry of Transportation shifting funds from highway expansions to public transit service improvements. We hope to make this a provincial election issue. If you agree, please ask Transportation Minister Rob Fleming (Minister.MOTI@gov.bc.ca) and BC Transit CEO Erinn Pinkerton (erinn_pinkerton@bctransit.com), and your MLA (https://lnkd.in/gjiV7mhw) to provide frequent and affordable bus services on the #66 and #70 routes, and to improve interregional bus services throughout BC.

In 2019, a proposal for FASTER Bay Area aimed to transform the region’s transit system with $100 billion over 40 years, but it was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, discussions led by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission are underway for a 2026 ballot measure to sustain and transform Bay Area transit, considering significant fiscal challenges and progress in transit integration since 2019. https://lnkd.in/gt5AeNjr #FASTERBayArea #TransitTransformation #MetropolitanTransportationCommission #RegionalTransit #BayAreaDevelopment

The state government's draft metropolitan housing targets can be summarised in 5 words: Double The Housing Almost Everywhere. It now needs a complementary public transport service plan to not leave people behind. You could call it: Double Service Frequency On Everything. Here's the video! https://lnkd.in/gwBetbhU

Some of us on the OneSTL communications team take transit regularly - but not all of us. Transit isn't always available where we are going, or the added travel time can be too great. #DumpthePump Day on June 20 is a great time to try transit, and new transit riders can sign up for a free transit pass for the month of July here: https://lnkd.in/ghvtnzQW If you wish transit were different in your area, you can join other voices calling for change, like Citizens for Modern Transit. You can also voice your support for transit during local planning processes in your area. We need cities that are built for people, not cars. Transit, tree cover, intersection safety, and crosswalk availability all go into creating a walkable city. Safety and availability are often cited as key concerns with transit. What other ways can we help make cities more walkable or encourage mass transit?

The MTC will vote on the regional transit funding measure on January 24, crucial for stabilizing Bay Area transit post-pandemic. Public input is crucial for shaping a measure that prioritizes progressive funding for transit instead of highway widening. https://lnkd.in/gK_iaNr7 #BayAreaTransit #RegionalFunding #TransitAdvocacy #PublicTransportation #SustainableMobility

"Historically, accountability measures have been focused on efficiency rather than effectiveness. In today’s world, effectiveness requires a clear vision that more than public transit buys into." Great article from TRI DELTA TRANSIT General Manager Rashidi Barnes on how we should be thinking about 'accountability' for public transit - requiring a more regional, cross-sectoral approach that involves not only transit agencies, but cities, counties, and regional planning authorities. https://lnkd.in/ghMS5SEU

Are you, or is anybody you know, a public transit or sustainable transportation advocate who votes in the Victoria-Swan Lake riding? Better Island Transit (https://lnkd.in/gqWpRtsH) is organizing a delegation to meet with Transportation Minister Rob Fleming and we would like to have more citizens from his district. Our short-term goal is to increase #66 and #70 bus service between Victoria and Nanaimo to at least hourly departures with $5 one-way fares. Our long-term goal is to convince the Ministry to provide support for interregional public transit services -- most BC highways have no or very limited service, which is unfair to non-drivers and by increasing highway traffic increases infrastructure costs. For more information see our backgrounder: https://lnkd.in/dFuhJcEf . Next month I'll present a paper on this issue, "A Business Case for Improving Interregional Public Transport Service Quality" (https://lnkd.in/geSPFXbU ), at Mobilizing Transportation Research in Canada 59th Annual Canadian Transportation Research Forum, May 12 - 15, 2024, Kelowna, British Columbia My conclusion: a highway is not complete if it lacks convenient and affordable public transportation services. Please share this request with any public transit advocates.

Our region’s lifestyle and its natural environment are at risk due to: • The very high dependence on private vehicles • The absence of a reliable, accessible public transport network Forecasts indicate that 830,000 extra car trips are anticipated on the Sunshine Coast each day by 2041 if the focus remains on vehicular traffic. We need to prioritise more sustainable transport. That is why we are seeking a Queensland Government commitment of $250 million to implement the Kawana to Maroochydore stage of the Sunshine Coast Public Transport Project prior to 2032.
