There’s a whole heap of big projects coming up, which will run for over 8 years, mainly in hospital construction to the value of $10B. In these larger environments, your focus will generally be on a narrower set of tasks. On the one hand, this provides you the opportunity to build expertise in your chosen area of work. However, on the other hand, you can find yourself at risk of being pigeon-holed into a particular role. This can create hurdles for you down the line if you decide you want to move into something different (e.g moving from a Finishes Foreman to a Structures Foreman). It can also be challenging to progress in companies of this size (CA to PM role etc.) due to the dollar value of the projects they complete. There is a lot of perceived risk involved for a builder in letting a first-time PM or Site Manager cut their teeth on a $100m + development. So, to ensure you don't get pigeon-holed, stick your hand up for any extra tasks or training beyond the norm of your role. You should be aiming for broader training, that widens your exposure and experience, so that you get to work across multiple trades, multiple roles. By managing your career through the next 8 years you can make sure you come out of it with a good set of skills that opens many doors, rather than a narrow set of skills. #ConstructionPeople #constructionindustry #constructionjobs #careerdevelopment #hiring

Important announcement: Building a GREAT career in construction isn't limited to working for a General Contractor only. There are a ton of great subcontractors out there that offer: Competitive pay. Clear career advancement opportunities. Great systems and processes that make your life easier. A collaborative team environment with team-building events. And much, much more. Subcontractors (especially in the finishing trades) are often overlooked. Why? People don't think of subs as being as professional as GCs. But the reality is that we are. And we're only continuing to improve. So please remember that a career in construction isn't limited to working for a GC. There are a TON of great subcontractors out there, too. #construction #scottcoatings #commercial

As a site engineer or supervisor. My job is not to teach a brick layer how to lay blocks. That is the knowledge they should have before seeking employment. My role is to guide them, point out errors, and tell areas that may need additional levelling and alignment. As a site engineer, if you surround yourself with workmen who have poor work ethics, the result will always be sub standard. The reason why, one of your greatest strengths should be attention to details. Can you identify errors? Strutinze those working for you and make sure they are competent and truly understand their role. Do not allow them jeopardize the quality of your work as this will affect your reputation. If they can't see the bigger picture and give you quality results, fire them from your site. Be the kind of person that doesn't accept sub standard output. Have the courage to let go anyone unwilling to pursue excellence. Recognise your role and the role of your team. This is very important. #construction #buildingconstruction #realestate #contractor #ProjectManagement

Construction /Project Management Professional experienced in Hospitality/resort/Mixed use, residential/com & Towers
Why the majority of engineers working with small/medium sized "contractors" are "Salary driven" rather "Knowledge seeker & or passion drive" ? Explanation: Construction process is a complex process that comprise of set rules and "daily" challenges that evolves from time to time due to "human resource". The company execute the project for "profit" & to remain in "industry" with tag line of various lucrative captions named as "objective" "policy" etc. Project has a timeline and budget and if timeline is conquered then company could achieve targeted "GOAL" ( Primarily financial) therefore "project staff" is under pressure from day 1 to achieve milestones. Though engineers are capable to execute the works a per planning however they become more dependant on second line of command and allow project management or CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT tools slipped and lost control to layman. their main goal is limited to meet the timeline without logical thinking, future forecast, analytical approach and qualitative & quantitative analysis. Their presence on project reduced to carry out crisis management ONLY caused by their lack of willingness to implement construction management techniques. Therefore they learn "NOTHING" and they gain "NOTHING" as an engineer, yet they grow in experience as layman with engineering degree. Their attitude is to please the bosses and take home salary. Unfortunate but this is the case with majority of engineers in such kind of organizations. #Construction #constructionmanagement #Projects
