#Medicaid '#unwinding' - the re-determination of Medicaid eligibility after the #COVID-19 pandemic paused such reassessments for years - is resulting in millions of eligible beneficiaries loosing healthcare coverage for purely administrative reasons. The result: interrupted care and lives put on hold. Patients trying to navigate the system are facing antiquated IT systems, long wait times, a lot of bureaucracy, and often illogical and nearly-impossible to navigate processes. States are supposed to ease this burden, including by automatically reassessing eligibility for the majority of beneficiaries - but the reality unfortunately looks quite different. A large fraction of re-determinations are still to come, so the current numbers, staggering as they may be, are just a harbinger of the woes to come. https://lnkd.in/eiTKJ65t

It's been over a year since states began kicking people off of Medicaid rolls as part of the unwinding. Thanks to detailed tracking by KFF, we know the extent of the fallout. Let's start with the big picture. When the unwinding began on April 1, 2023, about 94 million people were on the Medicaid rolls. Since then, about 20 million people have been disenrolled, 43 million have had their coverage renewed, and 30 million renewals have yet to be processed. Drilling down into these numbers reveals alarming trends. Nearly a quarter of people struck from the rolls are still uninsured. 36% of people without insurance said they are trying to renew Medicaid coverage, and 54% said other forms of coverage are too expensive. Three-quarters of people who were disenrolled reported worrying about their physical and mental health. Most delayed care or filling prescriptions while trying to find coverage. Half the people who accessed coverage outside of Medicaid now fret about their monthly premium costs, and three-quarters are concerned about affording healthcare services. Despite everything at stake, outreach to Medicaid members has been abysmal. A little more than half of adult Medicaid enrollees said they heard little or nothing about unwinding last year. And of the people who tried to renew their Medicaid coverage, 58% said they experienced some difficulty during the process, usually long wait times at call centers. These numbers show the Medicaid Unwinding's severe and ongoing health consequences. They also tell us that efforts to guide members through this challenging period have fallen flat. Health plans have an opportunity to help people secure coverage and improve engagement during the remaining 30 million renewals. But time is running out. We submitted comments when the rules were originally proposed and are pleased to see some of our recommendations adopted in the final rules. In our new resource below, you can learn about the proposed rules, our comments, the final rules, and our additional recommendations to strengthen and ensure adequate access to SUD and MH care for all Medicaid enrollees. Equity begins with access. With 3/4 of Medicaid disenrollments occurring not because of ineligibility but due to procedural issues, the solution to fixing a critical healthcare access problem should begin with fixing the system.
For many, the mere act of trying to stay on Medicaid is the biggest obstacle
