Some recent concept sketches of residential environments. How can plants and gardens be integrated with houses and interior living spaces? This is one of the questions that I am most enthusiastic about exploring in environmental design. A certain wild character should be allowed to emerge in a residential garden: a whimsical mix of the more formal requirements that people have, and the elements that spontaneously arise there of nature. It is this quality which brings a space to life. It is always unfortunate to find a garden with a completely artificial impression that seems to completely remove it from the wider context of the natural world. A garden needs not be completely untamed, for I see no point in trying to make human presence and creation invisible, but in the best cases a harmony exists between cultivated plants growing wild and the buildings which offer new boundaries and edges. The contrast between the built and the unbuilt, between wilderness and cultivation, strengthens the experience of both. Ideally some of the plants will also have a productive function. Trika Villa, a 425 sqm luxury residence and tropical sanctuary with 5-bedrooms and 5 bathrooms is a prime example of modern architecture using only natural materials. 🎋 The main materials used are earth and bamboo because of their superior functionality. Bamboo used as roofing material is structurally strong and acts as a great heat insulator at the same time. 🔥 The walls are laid of adobe bricks which are potent thermal insulators as well and they are finished with a fine earth plaster. A big bamboo roof is hovering above the whole mansion like an umbrella, protecting it against sunshine and rain, but not sealing off the rooms, creating open, naturally ventilated spaces that are still connected to the outside.
