We were honored to have Stephanie Hoopes, Director of United For ALICE, as a guest speaker during our latest DEI Coffee Break! ☕ Stephanie's presentation shed light on the financial hardship facing ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) individuals and families. Transportation costs and options can be significant barriers to ALICE households seeking access to jobs, health care, education, and opportunity. Together, we explored the intersection between financial security and transportation, focusing on what we as a community of transportation professionals can do to support ALICE. We thank Stephanie, United For ALICE, and United Way for your continued partnership, including with the Transportation Research Board and AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) as part of the national transportation vision framework supported by CS. It's exciting to see the impact of United For ALICE research and advocacy in galvanizing transportation leaders toward a transportation system that better serves all of our communities.

For Joachim Kaus, it brought back memories from his childhood when a neighboring town lacked water, and he soon realized the importance of preserving resources. For Corrado Ruffa, it was a special musical moment shared in his community—a moment of harmony, and accountability. For Alina, it meant getting up at 5 a.m. to reflect deeply on the beach, realizing that life is “an ocean of questions waiting to be answered.” For Lourdes, Eduardo, and Rogelio, it was an opportunity to celebrate their origins and life choices. >>> For us at Curia, this is now a token of pride – Our core #values are more than words on the wall; they are integral to who we are. I recently lost a friend and colleague that was so good about prioritizing family and friends as well as being so good at celebrating wins along the way. I find myself reflecting back on one of my favorite stories.... The life of Alexander the Great is filled with incredible, true stories, but the story I find most insightful is a myth about his death. It's full of important life lessons. On his death bed, Alexander the Great summoned his generals and told them his 3 final wishes: The best doctors should carry his coffin; The wealth he accumulated should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery; and His hands should be hanging outside the coffin for all to see. One of his generals, who was surprised by these unusual requests, asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say: 1) I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that, in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal. 2) I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, stays on earth. 3) I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is TIME. This story crystallizes the value of our most precious asset: time. We can always produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. In that regard, we are all the same. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back. If you are ever in doubt as to which is more important, health (which leads to time) or wealth, then ask yourself this: if you could receive 10 million dollars, but you would have to die next week, would you take it? Of course not! Time is the most valuable asset to all of us. The treasure of life is family and friends. Cherish every minute. I do and my friend did, and when you are feeling the pain of loss, it helps to have no regrets.

Our commitment to reconciliation gives a strong Indigenous voice to our Indigenous employees that is central to our decision making and delivers equitable access to employment and opportunities. This NRW, we're excited to launch our new RAP which will guide us for the next 2 years.   IAC Chair and proud Wangkumarra and Barkindji man, Sean Gordon, commends MAX for the strength of our commitment and the steps we have committed to in our new RAP. He said:   “There is a lot that has changed and it’s interesting to think about where that change happens. Leadership is critical but, in the end, change happens at the level of the individual. That person that rethinks what they are doing, how they do things, how they could do more or do it better, how they can support and build others. In the end, this comes back to respect. Respect for each other and our different histories and stories and the willingness to listen and consider those other perspectives.”   MAX Managing Director Darren Hooper affirms MAX’s commitment to driving reconciliation through our business and challenging ourselves to do more to make positive impact. He said:   “Within MAX, we have seen major change since our first RAP, this change driven through our Indigenous Advisory Committee (IAC) and our RAP Working Group. While we have achieved a great deal to date, we can do more and we can do better. I look forward to our IAC continuing to identify where we can refine and improve what we are currently doing and where there are new opportunities to stretch ourselves.   “We have come a long way but still have more to do.
