"Under the National Electricity Rules, AEMO applied an administered price cap of $600 per megawatt hour ($/MWh) and floor price of -600 $/MWh from 7:55pm Wednesday 8 May 2024.
Administered price caps will remain until wholesale electricity prices in New South Wales fall below the cumulative price threshold, possibly not until next week.
Despite these high wholesale electricity prices, at present there is sufficient electricity to meet demand in New South Wales and throughout the National Electricity Market.
In the 48 hours leading up to initiating the price cap, a number of major generation units went offline in New South Wales while scheduled maintenance was also taking place on transmission lines."
When buying wholesale fuel, managing costs is crucial for maintaining a healthy bottom line.
One effective strategy many businesses use is Fixed Forward Contracts (FFCs). These contracts allow companies to lock in 🔒 fuel prices for future dates, providing price certainty and shielding them from market volatility.
Our team at Shipley Energy has helped many wholesale fuel users / resellers with this type of planning this year.
👀Stay tuned as we dive deeper into the world of Fixed Forward Contracts in our upcoming series. We'll explore how FFCs work, their benefits, and how they can be used to navigate challenging market conditions like backwardation.
Follow Shipley Energy to learn more about Fixed Forward Contracts and how they can help your business manage fuel costs effectively. 🛢️ Don't miss our in-depth posts on this essential topic!

Funny fact: the name of the algorithm used in Italy, before PCR, was UPPO [Uniform Purchase Price and Zonal Sell Prices]. Let's say: an implicit auction with the PUN.
From a technical point of view, it was solved by iterating on a linear programming problem. After the PCR, Euphemia inherited the main characteristics of UPPO: the PUN is calculated iterating on a mixed-integer linear programming problem.
Looking at the algorithmic complexity, the order blocks modelled with binary variables introduce the combinatorial dimension of the day-ahead resolution.

Wednesday 31 March 2004, around 10.30 in the morning the results for the Italian day-ahead market for the delivery day 1 April 2004 were published for the first time. This marked the starting of the Italian wholesale electricity market.
20 years have passed, the electricity market has evolved and since 21 February 2015 has been integrated into the European Single Day Ahead Coupling with a gate closure shifted at 12.00 (originally it was set at 9.30). But the results have been delivered every day, with their fluctuations from 0 €/MWh in a few cases to more than 800 €/MWh during the infamous August 2022.
The story changes, but the wholesale electricity market persits.
Happy birthday, IPEX!
"Based on our modeling, setting electricity prices in advance using historical data has the potential to modestly improve efficiency. While simple policies offer gains on the order of 10%, sophisticated policies are not much better on average and often backfire. Complex time-of-use pricing is limited by the unpredictability of future real-time wholesale prices." #electricity#energypolicy
