One of the biggest differentiators in a successful startup team is the diversity in the experiences of the team. NYC uniquely draws people from all backgrounds, industries, and cultures. When building your team in the city, you tap into various experiences and life stories. Engineers often reflect a wide range of personal experiences, interests, and cultural exposures they bring to their work. The multi-disciplinary backgrounds directly contribute to your product. Heading into the summer I thought things might be slow. It's turned out to be anything but. In the back half of August the team knocked out 8 searches with clients who had an incredibly high bar for talent. This includes: ✅ Head of Product, Series A (Bain Capital Ventures) ✅ Product Lead, Series A (Thrive) ✅ Staff SWE, Series B (a16z) ✅ Director Product Marketing, Series B (Lightspeed) ✅ Tech Lead, Seed (Khosla) ✅ Founding AE, Seed (YC) Sure, layoffs.fyi reported 26,000+ layoffs in August alone. But the ecosystem is past fear mode now. A new generation of startups has cropped up that see only opportunity. We've talked with numerous founders who have wrapped up a company and are ready to hop back in as founders or founding hires. And the desire for truly great talent is still not met with enough supply. If there's one area of the market that's weaker, it's for middle-of-the-road talent. "Good but not great" is the most common rejection reason we hear. Companies are still gun shy about mass hiring, and prefer bringing on selectively great hires who meet a talent bar that's higher than before. We're in the new phase of "Every Hire Matters" -- and no longer in a "scale at all costs" mentality.

Starting a new team or company? I’ve always been the person to do things right from the beginning, not duct tape it and hope it works with the intent to “figure it out later” (which, let’s be honest, never happens unless and until you have a major issue). There’s so much uncertainty out there in tech and especially the gaming industry right now. And yet, there’s reason for hope: dozens, if not hundreds (maybe thousands?) of new studios are springing up. From the ashes of the terrible past 15 months, great teams and great games are going to get built, and that's exciting! But there’s one thing you absolutely, positively have to get right if you’re starting a new team… And that’s building out a sustainable company, with intentional organizational design. We're all standing at the precipice of breaking the cycle of attrition in games and tech – and we really, truly can do it. *If* we start these new studios on the best foot possible.
