I don't post much on LinkedIn, but I recently came across some information that I find disturbing - curious to see what others are experiencing. One of my friends is near graduation with a graduate degree in accounting, full 150 hours and intention to study for the CPA exam. I caught up with him recently and he mentioned that him and most of his classmates are having a tough time finding their first role in public accounting, including audit. This seemed odd to me because, in my experience, audit is ALWAYS hiring associates. I've worked at a few large firms throughout my young career, so I figured I'd reach out to a recruiter I've worked with to let them know about some students they could reach out to if they were looking for any help. Their response wasn't just "we're not hiring", but "we're not hiring associates in the foreseeable future". This response, in combination with the recent layoffs, firms comingling with private equity, and inorganic growth through huge mergers, has me wondering what's going on. Are these concerning signs for public accounting as a whole?
