Want to know how to build a winning team sustainably? For almost twenty years I’ve been working as a professional actor in dozens of highly diverse workgroups. Group sizes have ranged from a few individuals to about thirty, with age ranges varying from elementary school students to octogenarians. Despite this diversity, building a sustainable, thriving, efficient, and committed team always follows the same formula. Regardless of individual differences, a human remains a human. The mechanisms through which we perceive and experience the world are largely uniform for everyone. This shared experience serves as the foundation for making more universal claims, such as the idea that building a winning team starts with a favorable atmosphere. Friday nights in the fall are a favorite. I’m spent the past 4 years as a community coach my local high school. So many valuable lessons get taught through sports. Even though it’s taken away from some family time, my own kids don’t want me to stop because they get to be a part of something bigger. The essence of being part of a team resonates with me - whether on the field, at home, or in the workplace. The trade-off between speed and distance, suggests that while individual efforts may allow for quick progress, the collective strength of a team is vital for achieving long-term success and making substantial strides towards ambitious goals. If you can't share your insight and expert judgment on your #team without fear of negative consequences, then it's not a team. Do we feel and behave like a team, even though we're called a team? Simply giving a group the label of a team won't make it a team. Developing a group into a team is simple, but not necessarily quick or easy. If you know you're on a team that really isn't one, then it's never to late to start again. Why does this team exist? (What can't and won't happen if we don't exist or remain a group?) What characteristics and qualities do we need to possess in order to perform effectively as a team? What key measures do we need to track to monitor our effectiveness as a team? How do we need to think and act on a day to day basis to ensure we look and feel like a team?
