"How would you explain the importance of applied mathematics in today's world with just one sentence?" It's a tricky question, but our students in the Bachelor of Applied Mathematics gave some stellar answers as to the impact the discipline will have in the future. High School Students Redefine Mathematics In 2022, two students from St. Mary’s Academy in Louisiana achieved what few professionals have: they used trigonometry to prove the Pythagorean Theorem. This October, their work was published in The American Mathematical Monthly, including nine additional proofs—five using trigonometry and four from other mathematical approaches. The Pythagorean Theorem, discovered in the 5th century B.C., is foundational to mathematics. While many proofs exist, few rely on trigonometry itself, making this achievement truly exceptional. This is a powerful reminder that young minds can push the boundaries of knowledge and inspire new possibilities.

Do you still have your notebooks from middle school, high school, and college? I do. If you were to ask me today whether mathematics can be taught in a better and different way to enhance advancements in science and technology, my answer would be yes. We were never taught the history of mathematics, so we lack awareness of how it may have evolved over the past 359 years since René Descartes introduced the X and Y axes, and Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz made it more abstract. I believe I can help students excel in math. https://lnkd.in/gBjNK-5s

"Mathematics is about the big stories, not the grammar of the subjects," explains Marcus du Sautoy, Professor of Mathematics and Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford. During our recent Chats with Experts series, Marcus shared how the beauty of math lies in going beyond the technical basics—something that our students are currently learning in the Bachelor of Applied Mathematics. Listen to his explanation in the video below, and learn more about the program here: https://bit.ly/3Vc3m4O
