Why are we talking so much about EPDs these days, and what is it even? 🌿 EPD stands for 'Environmental Product Declaration', and that is exactly what it is; a declaration - not an endorsement. It's a comprehensive document providing vital information about the environmental impact of a product. EPDs typically include data on energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and other relevant environmental metrics associated with a product throughout it's life cycle. By providing this information in a standardized format, EPDs enable comparisons between similar products and assist customers, such as architects and construction firms, in selecting the most environmentally friendly option that aligns with their sustainability criteria. At Milford we are constantly working towards new product EPDs. We have completed our review of the first draft of v5 of the US Green Building Council's LEED scheme documents and have several concerns with the revised text: 🔸 Omission of PEFC: PEFC is not listed as a creditable scheme, unlike in the current v4. 🔸 Structural Timber Elements: These are not considered creditable under some requirements. 🔸 Inconsistent Terminology: There is inconsistent use of terms to describe certification schemes. 🔸 Unequal Credit Allocation: There is an unequal distribution of credits among certification schemes. 🔸 Certification Requirement: There is no requirement for structural timber elements to be certified to be creditable under the ‘Reduce Embodied Carbon’ requirements.
