Is Internal Audit for losers? Back in the day, it was where underachievers ended up, while others pursued more dynamic roles. Then came Enron, and everything changed. Internal Audit emerged as crucial. We stepped into the limelight, earning respect and reporting directly to CEOs, Boards of Directors, or Audit Chairs. We may not have been the trendiest choice, but we were in the inner circle. Fast forward to 2024: Internal Audit still faces significant challenges: Talent shortage Stifled limited curiosity Discouraged forward-thinking   Reluctance to embrace new technologies I believe curiosity and playfulness can shatter stereotypes and drive us forward in Audit. Let's talk about the power of #IndependenceAndObjectivity# – not as a mere instrument of authority, but as a “magic wand” that can conjure unparalleled value! ✨ In a world buzzing with conformity, some of us enjoy the “aura” 💫 of the independence and objectivity “shielding” 🛡 our roles, especially when we talk risk management & compliance. I couldn’t help noticing a repeating pattern lately of people sharing concerns on certain audit experiences perceived as potentially too authoritative. This brought me back in time to my early days as an internal auditor when my auditees kept telling me that I’m not like other auditors they engaged with. It must have been the “business side” blood still running through my veins. Now I realize that, all I was doing differently was that, instinctively, I was treating them like customers 👥 , trying to understand their business, their vision and their needs, making them understand why certain issues are worth fixing and aligning together 🤝 the final “offer”, the dreaded audit report, to match the common goal of both sides – 🎯optimal level of protection towards achieving the organization’s objectives. I must admit, my best memories of successful audits come from solving those “sensitive” issues. In the end, beyond the challenge, they give you a sense of purpose, that you’re not just a fixer, but you’ve just created value. And I have a few of these to remember across my career, both as an auditor, as well as an auditee. Independence and objectivity are not just mere concepts – indeed, they emanate some sort of power, but it can be the power to make a difference in a positive way. 💡 If you were blessed with a role that enforces this power for you, choose to be the architect of change, the visionary whose ideas resonate with innovation, and the creator of value that stands the test of time. I’m sure we all have similar positive experiences. ✈️ *We’re Boarding the Plane: Starting the Fieldwork on Our Audit Journey* Another audit journey has officially taken off, and now that we’re leaving the planning phase behind and diving into fieldwork, it’s important to remember that *risk assessment is more than a one-way ticket*—it’s a round trip. Throughout fieldwork, we’ll keep reassessing risks to: 1. *Spot new challenges* and adjust the audit program in real-time. 2. *Stay ahead of issues* as they emerge. 3. *Keep our focus* on areas that will have the biggest impact. *For the audit team*, this means staying flexible and ready to pivot as risks evolve. *For the auditee*, it ensures a more focused, relevant, and responsive audit process. Courage. We all need it once in a while. Sometimes more often than once in a while. Auditors often require courage: • To step into that first closing meeting. • To dig deep, and identify and communicate root causes. • To sit face-to-face with an audit client who is not (yet) a fan of internal audit. • To tell your Head of Audit where bottlenecks are occurring and your ideas to remedy them. • To travel to some foreign countries. • To leave your kids behind when you travel. • To write a short audit report when a long one would be easier (yes, you know I had to go there). And then there are the million things in our every day lives that we have to be courageous for. I get it. I’m facing one of those things today. My goal: get through the appointment, then hopefully have a speedy recovery. If I were to give one piece of advice to internal audit teams conducting an audit project, it would be this: never communicate newly identified observations or issues via email. Instead, make time to meet or call audit customers and their leaders to deliver the potentially bad news. If I were to give two pieces of advice, the second one would be to provide daily status updates during fieldwork. If your internal audit team carries out these two pieces of advice, any other problems that arise during the audit should be easy to manage through.
