Today, we're thrilled to announce that Tomorrow.io's first two microwave sounder satellites, Tomorrow-S1 and Tomorrow-S2, have successfully captured initial atmospheric observations within days of their August 16 launch. Tomorrow-S1 began collecting data just 11 days after launch, with Tomorrow-S2 following suit on August 30. This milestone represents a key step for Tomorrow.io in achieving its goal of providing unprecedented sub-hourly revisit rates—an industry-first. The observations from both satellites provide cutting-edge insights into atmospheric conditions, including temperature, humidity, and precipitation patterns, which are particularly impactful over data-sparse regions like oceans where other sensors are limited. Of particular note is the detailed multi-channel imagery captured of Typhoon Yagi, demonstrating the satellites' advanced capabilities in observing complex weather systems. "The initial data from our microwave sounders is already delivering high-quality results," said Rei Goffer, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Tomorrow.io. "The high-resolution imagery and frequency of observations we're achieving are set to revolutionize our weather prediction models, particularly in tracking rapidly evolving systems like typhoons.” While AI weather models are showing great promise, the global weather data problem remains a significant challenge. Tomorrow.io's constellation addresses this issue by providing a comprehensive global dataset crucial for training AI models and initializing them with real-time observations. This is particularly valuable in regions where traditional weather measurements are lacking, effectively creating the missing link for advancing AI-driven weather forecasting on a global scale. Tomorrow.io has developed its sounders payload in collaboration with MIT Lincoln Laboratory (MITLL), building upon radiometer innovations that MITLL developed for NASA’s TROPICS mission. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Tomorrow.io and build upon LL’s radiometer technology for use within Tomorrow.io’s microwave sounder constellation. Our work together marks a breakthrough in the revisit capabilities of these extremely valuable measurements," said Bill Blackwell, Laboratory Fellow at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Principal Investigator of NASA's TROPICS mission. "By increasing the frequency of global atmospheric observations, we are poised to transform our understanding of rapidly evolving weather systems, particularly in data-sparse regions. This advancement has the potential to greatly improve weather forecasting and climate monitoring on a global scale." While calibration is ongoing, both Tomorrow-S1 and Tomorrow-S2 are already integrated into the Tomorrow.io platform for real-time tracking. Earth Observations - Changing winds: 2024 In 2-days, when the sun sets, the mother earth would close the chapter of 2023 with a pain of two disturbed regions engulfed in war. Before these 2-events, humans were struggling to cope with the climate change and hence the demand on reducing the greenhouse gas emissions threw challenges to satellite designers on building tools in space both to keep a tab on the unwanted and protect the green cover and improve crop productivity. The hyperspectral imagers were just right to fulfill this task. This was precisely my prediction as I moved from lunar exploration to earth observations in the 3rd quarter of 2022. Now, every other country is scrambling for taking care of its national sovereignty and keep the national boundaries under the tight leash of space-based observations. The space-tech leaders too are concerned in improving their observing abilities with an additional enhancement both in improving the spatial resolution and having a constellation of them to improve the re-visit capabilities (at least once a day). To address this unprecedented situation, we at XDLINX Labs are getting equipped to provide 6-basic type of satellite buses starting from the XDSAT-NS: 6U, 12Kg to XDSAT-M600, a 200 kg class bus accommodating 125-Kg payload with 600-W of solar power generation. Just to quote an example of one of the XDSAT-NL which is being worked out for a user is a 16U cubesat with a mass under 25 kg which can accommodate an optical telescope at front end, offering a diffraction limited spatial resolution of sub 1.5-meter at 500-km low earth orbit. The efforts taken up at XDLINX are both to bolster the local design development of basic sub-components (Power supply, Communication and the skeleton) and opt for a best global player for providing the niche solution (optical payload) for the primary task. We are upbeat about having our strong presence in providing Earth Observations at a meter resolution with an additional spectral capability of 7-bands. XDLINX goal is to inch towards a mega-constellation to be able to make it near real time observations. It is for this task we are looking for a compassionate, dedicated Optical Engineer who could be more of a problem resolver and stands for the cause of XDLINX mission. 🌎 🛰️ 15 super important EARTH OBSERVING SATELLITES with the functions they play in monitoring the earth - part 1 1️⃣ Landsat series (United States) - The Landsat program has captured over 9 million scenes since its inception, covering approximately 60% of the Earth's land surface, forming one of the most extensive archives of Earth observation data. - Landsat satellites have orbited the Earth over 7,000 times, providing continuous global coverage for monitoring land changes and environmental phenomena. 2️⃣ Sentinel series (European Union) - The Sentinel satellites have captured over 1.5 petabytes of data since the launch of Sentinel-1A in 2014, contributing to a comprehensive and open-access Earth observation database. - Sentinel-1 satellites have detected over 200,000 radar echoes, allowing for all-weather, day-and-night monitoring of land and ocean surfaces. The Sentinel-2 satellites have collected over 2.5 million images since the launch of Sentinel-2A in 2015, with a spatial resolution of up to 10 meters. 3️⃣ Aqua (United States) - Aqua has completed over 110,000 orbits around the Earth since its launch in 2002, collecting valuable data on Earth's water cycle and climate patterns. - Aqua's onboard instruments have generated over 100 terabytes of data.
