Why Every Company Needs an Inclusive Design Advocate In today's rapidly evolving landscape, diversity and inclusion have become more than just buzzwords, they're essential components of successful business practices. That's why I firmly advocate for every company to consider hiring at least one individual with experience or interest in inclusive design. Here's why: ✨ Diverse Mindset: Individuals with experience in inclusive design bring a fresh perspective to problem-solving. They approach challenges with a mindset that considers the needs and perspectives of a wide range of users, resulting in more innovative and inclusive solutions. ✨ Enhanced People Skills: Inclusive design advocates possess exceptional interpersonal skills, honed through their understanding of diverse perspectives and experiences. They excel in communication, empathy, and collaboration, fostering stronger team dynamics and client relationships. ✨ Lived Experiences Knowledge: By drawing from their own lived experiences or those of others, advocates for inclusive design offer invaluable insights into the needs and preferences of underrepresented communities. This knowledge enables companies to create products and services that truly meet the needs of all users. ✨ Market Advantage: Companies that prioritise inclusive design gain a competitive edge in today's diverse marketplace. By embracing diversity and inclusion, they demonstrate their commitment to equity and accessibility, attracting a broader customer base and fostering brand loyalty. ✨ Legal and Ethical Obligations: In many jurisdictions, there are legal requirements and ethical imperatives to ensure products and services are accessible to all. Hiring individuals with expertise in inclusive design helps companies meet these obligations while also contributing to a more equitable society. #inclusivedesign #gaad #accessibility #inclusionanddiversity #businesshack

Inclusive Design = Not Interested? It seems to me that there's a growing number of people that don't want to talk or hear about Inclusive Design as much anymore. I believe there are at least two things at play here: 1. The topic is being addressed in ways that is reckless and causing dissension. 2. People are still feeling uncomfortable about it and therefore become paralyzed by fear. The reality is this: The US is very diverse + The level of diversity has been and continues to increase over time. So to ignore this topic when hiring our design teams or conducting user research or launching products, seems to be denying access to the very people that keep us working. I look forward to unpacking this a bit more tomorrow with the lovely folks over at Aquent Talent.

"I've found myself questioning whether I still belong in this industry?" This week alone, multiple designers have shared this sentiment with me, and it's disheartening to hear. When such feelings become a pattern, it's a signal of a bigger systemic issue. I believe the root of the problem, in part, lies in the confining boxes we've begun to place designers in - boxes that shouldn't exist in the first place: Design isn't about being confined to specific sectors. Design isn't about limiting creativity to certain products or platforms. Design isn't about portfolios, case studies, or tooling. It's time to break free from these constraining ideas in hiring practices. Design is a harmonious blend of art and science. It's fueled by an insatiable curiosity, an understanding of new contexts and use cases, and a passion for uncovering problems and crafting purposeful solutions. Whether it's a brand, an advert, a chair, a building, an app, or a website, the essence of design remains unchanged. Let's move beyond these restrictive criteria and embrace a more inclusive and open-minded approach to hiring across the design sector. Let's get back to focusing on the individual, their skill set, their culture add and the value they bring. Not the projects they've worked on or the brands they've worked for. Want to know how? This is exactly what we aim to help our clients to do. Drop me a DM to find out how. Let's start a conversation that leads to positive change in the industry - share your experiences and thoughts below! #Design #Designhiring #designjobs #designcareers #designrecruitment #recruitment

💖 There's something truly special about working in the space that I do. Every day, I feel incredibly privileged to do work that places empathy, collaboration, and inclusivity is at it's core. For me, co-design isn't just about creating solutions – it's about creating meaningful connections and empowering individuals to be active participants in shaping their own experiences. Whether it's working with customers, consumers, employees, or stakeholders, there's a profound sense of fulfilment in knowing that their voices are not only heard but valued. What truly sets this work apart is its ability to drive real change. By bringing together diverse perspectives and lived experiences, we're able to uncover insights and possibilities that we might never have imagined on our own. It's about recognising that everyone has a unique story to tell and a valuable contribution to make – a concept I'm sure we can all relate to on a personal level, but one that for some reason still seems difficult for organisations to do well. In a world where it's easy to feel disconnected, co-design reminds us of the power of human connection and the importance of empathy and understanding. It's about creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and respected – and that's something truly worth cherishing. So here's to participatory design becoming embedded in everything we do and a huge shoutout to the incredible individuals who I've had the privilege of learning from and getting to know along the way. 💫 #CoDesign #HumanConnection #Empathy #Inclusion #Gratitude #ParticipatoryDesign #HumanCentredDesign #Collaboration #InclusiveLeadership

What is Universal Design and why do you need it? At Neuroinclusionlab we believe that inclusivity is for everyone! That's why we're passionate about Universal Design—a concept that aims to make our world accessible and usable by individuals of all abilities and backgrounds. Whether it's in our built environments, digital platforms, or products, Universal Design ensures that everyone can participate fully and equally. Universal Design goes beyond physical accessibility. It recognizes that each person is unique and embraces diversity in all its forms. A ramp not only aids wheelchair users but also benefits parents with strollers or travellers with luggage. Captioning in videos not only assists the hearing impaired but also helps people watching in noisy environments. Why Universal design is so important for Neurodivergent employees? Neurodivergent individuals bring a kaleidoscope of unique talents, skills, and perspectives. Universal Design recognizes and accommodates these differences, creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and can shine in their own way. From flexible schedules to sensory-friendly spaces, it's about creating an environment where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work. Remember that diversity fuels innovation, and neurodivergent individuals often have an extraordinary ability to think outside the box. By incorporating Universal Design, workplaces become breeding grounds for fresh ideas and creative solutions. Let's champion Universal Design together! Share your thoughts, experiences, or ideas in the comments. How can we make our workplaces more inclusive? #UniversalDesign #Neurodiversity #InclusiveWorkplace #DiversityMatters
