At #Parliament this evening to listen in on the evidence session of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI about #AI & #Sustainability: #SmartCities & Clean Technologies Marrying my interests in digital twin, AI, sustainability, and equitable impacts this was a fascinating event. Chaired by Stephen Metcalfe and Lord Tim Clement-Jones, we heard from industry leaders already implementing pieces of this puzzle, and enjoyed “techno-optimistic” perspectives on benefits AI can bring. ⭐️ Will Cavendish, Digital Services Leader, Arup: Smart city tech is driven by sustainability challenges. AI is a critical enabling tech in design, build and operations, and can give 30-40% energy efficiency gains. ⭐️ @Courtney Holm, Vice President of Sustainable Futures, Capgemini: we must consider social sustainability, and act with human intelligence before automating with AI. “Equitable urbanisation”, eg of infrastructure like 5G is needed to gain ubiquitous benefits for all. ⭐️ David Elcombe, Managing Director, WindWorkX: shared about projects like CityMesh in Antwerp, and some very futuristic sounding capabilities being researched of drones, flying taxis, optimised energy use. But public engagement will be key. ⭐️ Iggy Bassi, Co-Founder, Earthena.AI: described integrated climate intelligence, a dashboard for cities to monitor and adapt ⭐️ Tim Kay, Director, Science and Technology Directorate, Department for Business and Trade: Long term investment and convergence of many sectors will be required. It’s clear that public-private collaboration will be needed to fully realise the benefits, but what does that look like? With the huge volumes and variety of sensors, monitoring and data needed to underpin transformation, it’s also clear that building public #trust is essential. I’m also now curious how this all intersects with the future of industry (i.e manufacturing, construction) and industry 4.0, which was briefly mentioned, and provides vital materials and infrastructure for smart cities. How does the work of programmes like TransFIRe Hub and other Transforming Foundation Industries projects, on topics like enablers for circular economy, all come together in this future picture? By the way, did you know that many APPGs are open for anyone to attend meetings. You can just register and (presuming tickets are available) join.

June 5 marks World Environment Day, and this year we celebrate by recognizing the groundbreaking work of Ensense, one of our recent incubation cohort successes. Ensense exemplifies RevHub's entrepreneurial ecosystem fostering impactful solutions that tackle climate change and shape a sustainable future. Led by Shahram Farhadi, Ensense leverages cutting-edge AI and data science to transform how cities manage public spaces. Their platform acts as a sophisticated sensory system, collecting data from strategically placed sensors and cameras which empowers city planners and policymakers to make informed decisions. For example, Ensense can pinpoint areas with high air pollution and give this information to stakeholders. This data informs targeted interventions like traffic flow optimization or green infrastructure projects. These results can improve air quality and combat climate change through reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, Ensense recognizes that data alone is not enough to create true, effective change, so they work closely with local communities to ensure their solutions are culturally sensitive and address specific needs. This fosters a sense of ownership among residents and builds long-term commitment to sustainable practices within communities. Investing in companies like Ensense is crucial for building a greener future. Their innovative AI solutions enable data-driven decision-making, leading to healthier cities and a more sustainable planet. Venture Studio Founder & CEO | Board Member of Connected Places Catapult Freight Innovation Cluster | UN Women UK Delegate (CSW68) | Tech London Advocate | Volunteer Society of African Earth Scientists
🌟What an inspiring week which featured the #ConnectedPlacesSummit🌟 I had the honour of moderating a panel on AI for Transport and Place, featuring innovators Mark Cramman from CC Informatics and Robert Harwood from Slingshot Simulations. 🚀CC Informatics is transforming infrastructure maintenance with AssetScan™, using AI and machine vision to interpret photographic data from drones, creating digital twins of structural deterioration. 🚀Slingshot Simulations’ Compass: Engine™, a decision intelligence tool, is revolutionizing how complex policy interventions are managed and scaled in place-based decision making. But the summit was more than technological showcases. It was a melting pot of ideas and networking: 🌐 Richelle Schuster FRSA led a compelling discussion on the value of innovation districts and strategies for scaling them, with Andrew Roughan emphasizing the need for unique, "supernormal" innovation within each district. 🌐 Arnold du Toit’s panel brought VCs and private equity into the spotlight, sharing insights across the investment landscape. 🌐 Margarita Vigrande-Ashe shared insights into ‘Zero Emission HGVs and Infrastructure,’ underlining the urgency and methodology of road freight decarbonization and hydrogen use. She emphasised the importance of disseminating information and lessons learned, showcasing real-world applications of new technologies. The amazing new connections made, from Katrina Kilkenny and Francesca J. Colloca of London Legacy Corporation to advocate for the North East powerhouse Charlie Charlton and leaders like David Elvy at Department for Transport, underscored the collective drive towards a smarter, more sustainable future. The summit concluded on a powerful note by Rt Hon Chris Skidmore: "There is no going back, no future economy without a green economy – the work of Connected Places Catapult is so integral… Businesses and industries are raring to go; they want that leadership position of net zero, and to start to introduce best practices, and take pilots and put them into place nationally and globally.” Thank you to all the visionaries, new connections, and the team behind Connected Places Catapult for an unforgettable summit. The path to innovation and sustainability is bright, and I’m excited to see where we go from here. 🌍✨ Shout out to Alisdair Ritchie Silvia Peneva Paul Wilson Prof Greg Clark CBE FAcSS Yusuf C.
