Tom Potter’s Post

Awesome evening with David Millar at Bremont Watch Company’s fabulous Henley HQ last night. David is known for being very candid and matter of fact about pro-cycling’s doping problem and how he succumbed to it, but it is thanks to him and a handful of others like Jonathan Vaughters taking proactive action to demonstrate riders can win without doping that we are now able to enjoy what he calls a golden era of pure pro-cycling with some incredible young talent racing extremely competitively drug-free. It was also great to hear how after such a painful downfall David found his peace and developed a new love of cycling for the enjoyment of it rather than just the competition. My take aways: 1. You have much more time than you think - be patient. Chip away. 2. Never give up; don’t panic. It might hurt, but you’ll finish and learn a lot. 3. The pain teaches you more than success; you learn much more about yourself and your resilience. (The best cyclists can endure immense pain to inflict suffering in their rivals and break them; despite the pain it’s not suffering to them) 4. The UK has the coolest cycling community - it’s just a bit more edgy and underground than anywhere else 🤙🏼 5. There’s no such thing as mechanical-doping in pro-cycling; any accusation of it can just be considered a great compliment by the recipient! 6. I do not have the build to be a competitive cyclist!
