I am learning to paint icons, using the ancient method of painting with egg tempera. It is a very meditative process, demanding a lot of patience and precision. The paints are made in very small quantities, using just a few drops of egg yolk and a tiny amount of pigment. There are 7 base layers of the darkest colours, as we work from the darkness to the light. Everything is symbolic, from the colours, to the form and positioning of the hands, the direction of the gaze. Such a beautiful craft. Here is the finished icon. It is precisely one of those paintings that you can't easily analyze in the usual way or verbalise but simply just experience. Perhaps, the best short description of it would be the following: "(Six Persimmons is) passion... congealed into a stupendous calm." — Arthur Waley. The calm Waley observes. The slowing down in a time overwhelmed with information. The persimmons: bitter when unripe and melting with sweetness when ripe. The six ungrounded (no connection to the space, floating, no shadows) persimmons.Their #simplicity invites one to slow down the gaze. It takes a (almost) a lifetime (often in ungrounded void) to get at one's zenith. Slow down.
