It's Mental Health Awareness week with the theme, "Moving more for our mental health" something which can be a big problem for people with disabilities I'm a big believer in the importance of our being more active, having personally experienced the impact it had on my mental and physical health, whilst being trapped in a home which was inaccessible and laid up for weeks on end in agonising chronic pain. It's why I started my Disabled Adventurer profile and creating video content, to promote accessible activities available across my own region of Northamptonshire and sharing my own journey of adapting to becoming a wheelchair user and the adventures I get up to. This is also why I say Rock Engineering Limited and the RockClimber project literally saved my life, because without the fun, excitement and complete freedom of getting out, I'd have acted on my suicidal thoughts. I know the media, charities and others will be referring to the paralympics more and more over the coming weeks/months, but moving more doesn't solely mean starting a sport, it's about getting out generally and being active. This could simply mean heading outside each day for 20mins or getting involved in a local community group and maybe doing some voluntary work, but whatever it is try to do more. The greatest thing I gained from doing more, wasn't just about feeling better and having some fun, but the connections I made with others and benefitting from a sense of being more connected to my local community. I'll be speaking alot about "connections" in my posts this week as I reflect on; the wonderful weekend I've just had with good friends Isaac Harvey MBE and Rachel Harvey-Afuwape and what's happened since I spoke at the BatonOfHopeUK suicide prevention initiative last year, as I prepare to speak again this year, at their conference on Thurs 16th May in Sheffield. #Survivors #MHAW2024 #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #Disability #LivedExperience #SharedExperiences

☀️Parents in my professional network: What type of videos would be helpful for you to show your kids in the areas of mental health and emotional regulation? If you could open up youtube and show your kids/family content around wellbeing and emotional development - what would you like to see? 🌈For example: You want to help your kids to handle transitions better. You want to show your kids content to help build self esteem. You want to show your kids content to help them be kinder to others. You want to see content to help your kids fall asleep / calm their mind at the end of the day. ⭐️Tapping into my professional network for ideas we continue to build Recess with Guncle Abe and need your help! x Our team is feeling amped about the momentum our show is having, all that we're learning, and where we're going - which includes a visit to Sesame Street headquarters in a two weeks!

"The time is always right to do what is right." - Martin Luther King, Jr. For us, "doing what's right" means helping people access diagnostic services for their seizures, a crucial first step to begin #epilepsy treatment. Over 39 million people in low-resource regions live with untreated epilepsy-- impacting their physical, social and economic well-being. Training neurodiagnostic technicians where they're in short supply and raising public awareness about epilepsy and mental health (in partnership with Purple Point Neurodiagnostics) are positive actions we take to correct healthcare inequities. #MLKday #SDOH #healthequity #brainhealth

👉🏾 In the midst of ongoing trauma and reminders of trauma to the Black community as we reflect on our collective history this month, it is crucial to highlight the benefits of therapy 🖤 and the importance of healthy outlets for our mental well-being. This discussion is not limited to #BlackHistoryMonth; it should be an ongoing conversation every month. I will highlight resources available for the Black community below👇🏾 but first…here is why therapy matters: 🔹 Healing and Resilience: Therapy provides a safe space for individuals to process their emotions, confront past traumas, and develop coping strategies. It allows for healing and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges, providing tools to navigate the complexities of life. 🔹 Breaking Stigmas: Seeking therapy helps break down the stigma associated with mental health in the Black community. By sharing our stories and experiences, we encourage others to prioritize their mental well-being and seek the support they need. 🔹 Addressing Historical Trauma: Therapy acknowledges the historical traumas that have disproportionately affected the Black community. It provides a platform to discuss the impact of systemic racism, discrimination, and generational trauma, fostering personal growth and community healing. 🔹 Building Stronger Connections: Therapy offers an opportunity to build stronger connections within the community. By engaging in group therapy or seeking therapists who understand the unique challenges faced by Black individuals, we create a supportive network that validates our experiences. 🔹 Empowering Self-Care: Therapy encourages self-care practices that are essential for mental well-being. It teaches us to prioritize ourselves, set boundaries, and engage in activities that nurture our minds, bodies, and souls. 🔹 Resources for Therapy: Here are some valuable resources for therapy in the Black community: 1️⃣ Therapy for Black Girls (Website: therapyforblackgirls.com) 2️⃣ Black Mental Health Alliance (Website: blackmentalhealth.com) 3️⃣ The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation (Website: borislhensonfoundation.org) Remember, mental health is an ongoing journey, and seeking therapy is a powerful step towards self-care and personal growth. Let's continue supporting one another, embracing our resilience, and breaking the barriers that hinder our well-being. Together, we can create a healthier and more empowered Black community. #MentalHealthMatters #BlackCommunityHealing #TherapyIsPowerful #Therapy #MentalHealth #Community

Thoughts on Last Night’s #MoreLightsabers Event First, my deepest gratitude to everyone who came out. Your presence showed care for Reese and commitment to healing, inclusion, and mental health awareness. The heart and compassion we shared were powerful. It’s unfortunate that Reese couldn’t join. After encouragement, he shared he was afraid of the police. Later, he was informed that a restraining order from @Waverlycardiff ’s GM prevented him from attending. While I take safety seriously, the timing was disappointing that Reese was prevented from attending his own celebration. Still, I want to acknowledge Reese’s bravery—his spirit was with us. Upon arrival, the security presence and armed guards with tasers created tension. Waverly’s Investor and Director of Operations, had expressed interest in aligning with healing, mental health awareness and inclusion, but the night felt focused more on the past than moving forward. A participant noted that their approach was “unreasonable and unloving,” which hurt to hear. The most powerful moment was when a young boy named Miles, who has Autism, unexpectedly shared his experience of feeling different and his love for Star Wars. His bravery embodied the heart of why we gathered—to listen, understand, and stand in solidarity with those who feel unseen. Unfortunately, Waverly’s focus on blame overshadowed the opportunity for growth. Even more heartbreaking, Reese is being removed from our community. This shouldn’t happen to someone who simply needed inclusion and support. We gathered to support Reese, advocate for mental health, and create healing. This is about building a community that celebrates differences and extends compassion. Let’s continue advocating for Reese and others who feel marginalized. Together, we’re standing for something bigger—compassion, inclusion, and mental health awareness - the #cardiffway . If you were there or this resonates with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. With gratitude & a heart for healing, Neal #CardiffWay #HealingForAll #MentalHealthAwareness #Inclusion #MoreLightsabers #CommunityHealing #PeaceAndUnity #PostTraumaticGrowth #EndurantMovement

Child and Family Therapist / Registered Play Therapy Supervisor / EMDRIA Approved Consultant / Parenting With Gelly Courses / Author
What causes us to make certain decisions as adults and as parents? Is it about what we want or need? Is it about what we think is in our children’s best interest? Are we trying to “ make it” in the world of business? OR Is it trauma? Are our decisions based on “ speaking back” to someone in our childhood? Are our decision based on “ making up” for our childhood? Are our decisions based on what we “ should” do or what we “ need” to do based on our childhood experiences? While I’m not one to base everything we do as adults on our childhood experiences, many times this is the reality, whether we realize it or not…. As a Child and Family therapist, I listen to a lot of parents speak about their own trauma and how it impacts their lives and decisions they make regarding parenting. The most key factor is helping get clarity is making connections between past and present and how they will impact the future. That is the process of good therapy! Support, safety, a place to address feelings and emotions that don’t make sense; it is where we can fumble and not have to have pretenses. When we take the time to find ourselves, we can be more available to our children! We can see their needs and make better decisions. We can make better choices for ourselves, our kids, our businesses and our lives 👍 Are you in touch with what may be blocking you as a human being, a parent or a #businessowner and #femaleentrepreneur ? What have you learned that can inspire someone else to grow? #parentingwithgelly #gellyasovski #socialworkers #therapists #playtherapists
