On this day in 1989 – The 6.9 Mw Loma Prieta earthquake shakes the San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Coast, killing Sixty-three. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing. And so does my wife - She had just crossed the Cypress Structure. The boys and I were about to watch the Bay Bridge World Series - Giants vs "A"s Then, things shook.

Yes. I am posting a statement I made 11 years ago. Why? If I post it, I might read it. If I read it, I will evaluate it. If I evaluate it, I might find some areas where I still agree with myself. If I disagree with myself, I can congratulate myself for being open to change. I can also ask why I agree or disagree. What has changed in the world to inform me. What has changed in me to alter my perspective? That is my work to do. You do your own. To the extent that my politics are based upon principles, I think that the change has been more of an evolution with the principles remaining intact. Regarding application, there is always necessary adjustment. Regarding perspective, I hope that my vision gets clearer with each passing year and that my heart grows larger and more tender. — — — — — — — — — — - My Blast from the Past

There are real problems in this tired world. And, there are not a few phony problems. There are those who have problems, those who cause problems ... ...and those who do both and ... ... take themselves too seriously. You need some funny today. You need some funny every day. Get enough funny and you can handle your problems better.

Born October 17, 1711, Jupiter Hammon, writer, enslaved American, poet, preacher, businessman from Lloyd Neck, Long Island, New York. He was a committed evangelist who took a biblical position to criticize slavery while teaching his fellow enslaved people how to get along while the institution existed. His message was the maintain their dignity, morality, and spirituality as children of God. By use of symbolism and metaphor, he was able to craft his criticism so that he could freely express his prophetic thoughts.

I wanted to share this again because you may have been startled into wakefulness this morning with a sense of dread. I think that today offers you something better than that.
