🌍 Happy Birthday OpenStreetMap! As OSM marks its 20th anniversary, let’s take a look at how this groundbreaking project has changed digital mapping and given people around the world more power over maps. Founded in 2004 by Steve Coast, OSM was created as a map by the people, for the people — a platform where anyone could contribute. This open and collaborative model has grown into one of the most detailed maps on the planet, democratizing geographic information and breaking down barriers. 🤝 OSM's data impacts millions of people every day as it continues to enhance map quality and functionality, proving that open technology and collaboration can change the world. What role will maps play in the next 20 years? Read more about OSM’s impact and future 📍 https://lnkd.in/drQQGKvA

Why are you contributing to OpenStreetMap? How did you end up in OpenStreetMap? Why should someone contribute to OpenStreetMap? etc. are some of the many questions I used to get when talking about #OpenStreetMap. "The Mapping Evolution in My Life" - this blog covers my journey with OSM and Why OSM Matter. Read the Blog: https://lnkd.in/dfDnviHH Stay tuned for the second part of this series "Mapping for Tomorrow: Building Resilience through OpenStreetMap Contributions" will cover the Motivation for Contributing to OSM, Some OSM Impact Stories, Growth with OpenStreetMap (OSM), Getting Started with OSM Let me know your thoughts if you would like to add anymore points. #Mapping #OpenData #CommunityImpact #OSM

Digital #maps and #geo data have disrupted how we navigate the urban maze. At the same time, sovereignty over maps and #GIS tools is in the hands of just a few players. Open source initiatives such as OpenStreetMap have only recently manifested a scalable integration of heterogeneous data resources through exciting initiatives such as the Overture Maps Foundation. Given the significance a digital representation of the real world holds regarding economic, political, behavioral, legal, and regulatory impact, Gemma Newlands (Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford) and I explore whether the concept of #DigitalPublicInfrastructures should be applied here. Open Camp Open data camp, open innovation camp, open source camp, all really cool, but you know the one thing they have in common? None of them involve camping or being in the open. I've had this stupid idea for a while, combining being outdoors and things that I work on, like data, innovation, infrastructure and just generally things that try to make the world better. I want to combine the slowness of nature, with some interesting thinking and experimenting. Walks, talks, ideas and action, all out in the open. But is it actually a stupid idea? You decide. I set up a landing page which let's you express an interest. Enough interest and I'll make it happen in 2025 https://opencamp.carrd.co/

It was an honor to share the stage with Pauline Okeyo (Esri), Charles Mwangi (Kenya Space Agency), Stephane Vouillamoz (Novel-T) at #Geopalooza to discuss how open-source is transforming the geospatial landscape. One interesting thing about my fellow panelists is that all of them come from organizations that use ODK. Here's why that's good and bad and what we need to do to get more good and less bad. ❤️ It's good that open source has democratized access to geospatial software, reduced duplication of effort, and accelerated innovation. 😭 It's bad that the burden for providing open-source software is unfairly distributed because so many benefit but don't give back. If we want to see an acceleration of impact, we need to change the culture around open source to ensure projects have enough resources to continue. Fortunately, the answer is pretty simple. 👉 If you make open-source software, give beneficiaries the option to pay. And if you benefit from open-source software, pay the people who make it. If you missed the panel, you can watch it at https://lnkd.in/gaji8MBf. It was a great conversation! Thanks to Declan Ottaro (Ushahidi) for moderating and to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and DevGlobal for bringing so many amazing people together.

Google Research does many amazing things. One of those is the Open Buildings initiative which provides dataset of 1.8 billion building detections, across an inference area of 58M km2 covering Africa, South Asia, South-East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean (now in it's 3rd edition). This helps understand population density, give a clearer depiction of urban and rural infrastructure across these regions and helps those planning either environmental or humanitarian responses.
