The reality in Europe - After years of surging growth, selling #EVs is becoming tougher. Generous government incentives are disappearing in #Europe and fewer vehicles qualify for them in the US. While a range of new models and commitment-light leasing options have attracted the attention of electric enthusiasts, some years into the #EV revolution, infrastructure and price still remain roadblocks to widespread adoption. #Carmarkers are already beginning to hedge their bets. #Volkswagen’s #Audi brand is paring down its #EV lineup, and VW is taking a step back from plans to sell stakes in its battery unit. Didn't German car manufacturers and -suppliers read our 2017, 2018, and later annual DNV Energy Transition Outlooks. It repeatedly forecasted that in Europe, 50% EV markets share would be reached around 2030... "Just five years ago, Andreas Wolf was seek­ing to win round investors on his plan to turn Bav­arian auto­mot­ive sup­plier Vitesco Tech­no­lo­gies into a spe­cial­ist in parts and sys­tems for elec­tric vehicles. “Nobody believed in it,” the Vitesco boss said, under­scor­ing how late incum­bents were to real­ise that com­bus­tion engine cars would soon be releg­ated to the past. There were, he said, “thou­sands of argu­ments” as to why the era of elec­tric vehicles “would never come. It only changed about two years ago.” It has been a bru­tal few years for the Ger­man car industry, Europe’s largest, employ­ing about 800,000 people. Com­pan­ies such as BMW, Mer­cedes-Benz and Volk­swa­gen are scram­bling to ramp up EV sales while a grow­ing num­ber of Chinese start-ups announce elec­tric model launches in Europe."

📍 The voices asking to review the CO2 emission targets are more frequent. ⚠ BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse urges the EU to reevaluate CO2 targets amidst tightening emissions regulations and a looming 2035 combustion engine ban. Despite BMW's efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, Zipse anticipates challenges meeting the 2025 targets. Volkswagen and Renault CEOs echo similar sentiments, advocating for a review of demanding regulations. While BMW aims for 20% BEV production by 2025 and 50% by 2030, Zipse warns of consumer resistance to #EVs. German carmaker Mercedes-Benz wanted to become fully electric by the end of the decade. The announcement of 2021 was accompanied by the subordinate clause "wherever market conditions permit." And it is precisely these conditions that are apparently forcing the Stuttgart-based company to reduce its targets significantly.
