"Secure and sustainable access to critical minerals is essential for smooth and affordable clean energy transitions,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “The world’s appetite for technologies such as solar panels, electric cars and batteries is growing fast—but we cannot satisfy it without reliable and expanding supplies of critical minerals.” According to the analysis, the world’s current projected supply of lithium will meet only 50% of global demand by 2035, while copper resources will meet just over two-thirds of demand by that time." The global energy transition is not just about replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. It is also a transition that is closely linked to the critical minerals that form the backbone of clean energy technologies. From copper to rare earth elements, nickel, lithium, graphite, and silicon, these minerals play a central role in the manufacturing of wind turbines, electric vehicles, and other green technologies. The International Energy Agency estimates that more than 3 billion tons of minerals and metals will be needed by 2050 to support this transition. Ensuring a sustainable supply of these minerals is therefore a major challenge that all countries and communities must work together to address.
