🚫🗑 30 March was International #ZeroWaste Day 👇 💡 On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution at its seventy-seventh session to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste, to be observed annually. 💡 Türkiye put forward the resolution and 105 other countries joined in sponsoring it. It follows other resolutions focused on waste, including “End plastic pollution: towards an internationally legally binding instrument”, adopted at the UN Environment Assembly on 2 March 2022. 💡 During International Day of Zero Waste, Member States, organisations of the UN system, civil society, the private sector, academia, youth and other stakeholders are invited to engage in activities aimed at raising awareness of national, subnational, regional and local zero-waste initiatives and their contribution to achieving sustainable development. 💡 The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) jointly facilitate the observance of International Day of Zero Waste. 💡 Promoting zero-waste initiatives through this international day can help advance all the goals and targets in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including Sustainable Development Goal 11 and 12. These goals address all forms of waste, including food loss and waste, natural resource extraction and electronic waste.

🌳 Zero Waste Day 2024: Urging Waste Management to Lead the Zero Waste Movement The United Nations recently hosted an event commemorating the second International Day of Zero Waste, shining a spotlight on a project launched in Türkiye aimed at lessening waste accumulation. March 30 was designated as the International Day of Zero Waste by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 2022. This occasion presents an excellent opportunity to address a sector often overlooked in its connection to nature and biodiversity, emphasizing the crucial necessity for effective business initiatives and detailing practical approaches for businesses to succeed in this effort. Turkish First Lady Emine Erdoğan urged concrete actions toward sustainability during the event. In a video message sent to the event in New York, she highlighted the alarming reality of daily plastic waste equivalent to the load of 2,000 garbage trucks being dumped into oceans, rivers, and lakes. She questioned the morality behind humanity's creation of plastic islands, akin to continents, floating in the ocean, and pondered whether progress should not contribute to a more civilized and humane world. Drawing from the harsh lessons of climate change and environmental pollution, she stressed the imperative to combat these challenges and take tangible steps toward sustainability in the context of the responsibility to future generations. #ZeroWaste #Sustainability #UNZeroWasteDay #GlobalResponsibility #GTEC

"Founder & Principal Consultant at PPfSSA | Expert in Thermoplastic Piping Systems and Innovative Solutions"- Former Technical Manager at SAPPMA
PPfSSA is proud to have participated in the recent Safripol Sustainability Conference. This landmark event brought together leaders from across South Africa's plastics industry to address one of our most pressing challenges: plastic pollution. We engaged in crucial discussions about transforming our industry and building a circular plastics economy. Key takeaways from the conference: Collaboration is critical: We witnessed an inspiring display of unity as competitors set aside rivalries to tackle shared challenges. Innovation is driving progress: South African firms showcased cutting-edge recycling technologies and circular product designs, proving our capacity to lead in sustainability solutions. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) shows promise: While still in its early stages, the EPR scheme is already improving collection rates and funding crucial recycling infrastructure. Recognition of the informal sector: The critical role of waste pickers in our recycling ecosystem was acknowledged, emphasizing the need for a just transition to a circular economy. We recognize that significant hurdles remain. Recycling rates must improve dramatically, and substantial investment in waste management infrastructure, especially in underserved areas, is needed. However, we leave this conference with renewed determination. The race to sustainability is long, but the stakes are too high for us to falter. By integrating diverse solutions – from basic waste sorting to cutting-edge chemical recycling – we can transform our industry into a model of circular economy principles. PPfSSA is committed to this crucial journey. Together, we can end plastic pollution and create a sustainable future for South Africa and beyond. #PlasticsSustainability #CircularEconomy #SouthAfricanInnovation #WasteManagement #RecyclingTechnology #ExtendedProducerResponsibility #SustainableBusiness #EnvironmentalAction #SafripolConference #PPfSSA

The new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has just been released, proposing global policies to address the entire life cycle of plastic. 🎯 The goal is to reduce #plastic #pollution by 96% by 2040. The study suggests that a combination of policies—ranging from advanced waste management and recycling to reducing the use and waste of plastic—could ensure significant environmental and economic benefits. 🔎 The OECD warns that without stricter measures, plastic production could increase by 70%, from 435 million tons in 2020 to 736 million in 2040. 🌍 This scenario would lead to a 50% rise in improperly managed waste. Such an outcome would have serious environmental consequences, including a 40% increase in plastic release into rivers, oceans, and other ecosystems. ➡️ Full Article: https://lnkd.in/dhwSGXMW #RinnovabiliNET #environmnent #greeneconomy #solar #eolic #energy #greenenergy #solarenergy #windenergy #sustainable #sustainablity #sustainabledevelopment
