I have some counterintuitive advice for you scientists on the job market. Don't just apply to any job. Don't just accept any job offer. Why? Because money isn't everything and focusing on the wrong shiny objects can really waste your time.  𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Going from $50k/yr postdoc to a $100k/yr job that aligns well with what you want is much better than the $120k/yr job that doesn't fit your personality or interests. But if you don't define what you want, you won't know what to focus on. Here's how to solve that problem.  Come up with an ideal career profile by addressing these categories 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲/𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 geographic location proximity to family city population cost of living area culture climate 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 external or internal collaboration? technical, non-technical, or hybrid? consistent schedule or dynamic? on-site, hybrid, or remote? animal or in vitro? lab or office? travel or no? 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲 early startup / mid-sized / or large company? pre-launch or post-launch? service or product? regulated or not? public or private? 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 / 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 contract or employee? PPO or HMO offerings? stock options/equity Retirement plans layoff record PTO policy ---------- It's totally counterintuitive, but by clearly defining what you want and having mapped out your requirements, you can focus so much better and move forward with clear purpose and intent. #biotech, #biotechjobs, #scientist

Reflecting on the past three months since my department was decommissioned, the journey to find a new role has been challenging. I've applied to 73 remote positions in the healthcare/research sector (since the beginning of the new year), hoping to contribute my skills and passion. Despite landing 5 interviews (but mostly being ghosted 🫠) , the road has been tough. Two offers were tantalizingly close before being rescinded and given to internal candidates. Each setback fuels my determination to find the right fit. What I bring to the table? Let me speak of my talents by way of positive affirmations. I bring an impressive blend of clinical research coordination and nursing expertise. My ability to streamline trial timelines, ensure site compliance, and mentor teams reflects on my dedication and leadership skills. I have a comprehensive understanding of GCP and ICH guidelines, and many certifications that pertain to the research industry. I am well-equipped to navigate complex research environments effectively, with emphasis on DCTs. My experience in various aspects of research, from feasibility evaluations to quality assurance monitoring, patient recruitment and retention, highlights my versatility and commitment to excellence. Hiring Neurodivergent Tech Talent Workshop 🧠 What a fantastic way to start a Thursday! This morning, I attended a brilliant workshop titled "Hiring Neurodivergent Tech Talent," superbly hosted by Parul Singh. The session provided powerful insights and statistics from the Tech Talent Charter, revealing that 53% of tech professionals identify as neurodivergent, with ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia being the most common conditions. A key highlight was the discussion on Universal Design—creating products and environments accessible to everyone. A big shout-out to companies like John Lewis & Partners that are pioneering Transparent Interviewing, a practice that perfectly illustrates this concept. Such a great morning, and I really enjoyed having the opportunity to connect with many businesses that, like Digital Gurus are dedicated to creating an inclusive hiring environment. Sometimes the best player for your Life Sciences team isn't the one you expected, but the one who brings something no one else thought about. My recruitment clients often have their own solidified ideas during the role curation phase of Moxee's intake process. But… so do I. In February, I was prescreening a candidate for a VP of Sales and BD role I'm working on in the #genomics space in Europe. And while he was far from paper-perfect… he had that "thing." We video called, and I just thought... UGGGGH! I CANNOT WAIT TO CALL THEM AND TELL THEM ALL ABOUT YOU!! 🤣 I just… knew. I was energised, and so was he. During our weekly feedback call, I told the CEO what my reservations were as a result of the “unconventional” profile, but also why this meant he might see things others wouldn’t. And lo and behold… he accepted the offer one hour ago, despite being up against four others who were their exact type on paper. My client just knew, too. But, this also underscores a potential flaw in the biotech recruitment industry. It's often driven by an internal model that prioritises speed over depth for commission purposes, a fear of losing business, and lacks the sector-specific insight needed to truly champion “unconventional” candidates. This not only stops creativity/diversity… but also risks turning recruiters into transactional robots with a crappy perception, rather than strategic partners who add lasting value. Life Sciences startups need minds that often DON'T fit the mould – and that’s where a good recruitment partner comes in. Connecting the dots that you don’t even see. Finding your next Life Sciences hire is like when we hired Queenie into the fam. Sometimes… the one that jumps out isn't the chilled pedigree with a shiny logo. But the quirky mix that's full of surprises. Like Queenie dawg, and her Queen Ann legs. 🤣 P.S. - Obviously, this is waaaaay less common while I’m filling technical roles.
