How We Shifted The Convo From Diverse Stock Photography To Diverse Datasets ! We are committed to aligning with companies to help make their products more inclusive in a variety of image driven ways. Over the last few years we've partnered with the Product Inclusion & Equity plus Responsible Innovation teams at Google to provide thousands of images of people from historically marginalized backgrounds in order to have representative data that reflects the experiences and needs of all people who use Google products. "When products are not built using diverse and representative data, they can end up being less useful for everyone. So we’ve been retraining some of our earlier machine learning models with more inclusive datasets: sets of data we use to build our hardware and software products," Sydney Coleman, Product Inclusion & Equity Team Member shared in the below article regarding our partnership. In working together, Google was able to use more inclusive datasets to create Real Tone on Google Pixel, which represents skin tones authentically and beautifully for all users. The models represented across the gender spectrum, models with darker skin tones, and models with disabilities (and people who represent the intersectionalities of these identities). During my time as a Master's candidate at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, I did a project in information visualization. The project aimed to break down and visually encode the complex Privacy Policy of Pinterest, which involved analyzing over 4,000 words and 48 internal links. The challenge? Turning an overwhelming 20 page consent form into an accessible, navigable visualization. The goal was to foster user engagement, making the dense content of online consent forms more transparent and understandable. Curious to see how visualizing these networks can transform user experience? Check out the full project here https://lnkd.in/gP9Mm8uV #InformationDesign #DataVisualization #DesignResearch #UserExperience #EmilyCarrUniversity

One thing top of mind that I really admired of my teams at Google and Blue Shield of California was that there was a clear focus on accessibility and designing for those who need really amazing experiences that work and how we can help make their lives better and in direct effect, make all of our lives better. Earlier this week, I encountered yet another accessibility overlay/widget, and my blood boiled. It doesn't matter if these companies market themselves as a fix for compliance, a solution for those who can't afford their own access technology, or whatever else. The truth is they cause harm and benefit no one. So, let's talk about it from the perspective of a screen reader user, shall we? To start, many of these pieces of code lead to automatically generated alt text, and while generative AI has opened up the potential of such alt text to be actually useful the more simplistic versions offered by most overlays benefit no one. Second, anyone who makes it required to use a mouse to enable their screen reader settings clearly has absolutely no idea how screen readers work and could benefit from consultation with actual, qualified people with disabilities. Lastly, 90 percent of websites are difficult enough to navigate all by themselves for screen reader users, let's not even get started on the additional accessibility issues these overlays create. Maybe they are less expensive than remediating a website that is broken for accessibility, and maybe they seem to be a quick solution. However, there is no quick solution better than building in true accessibility from the ground up. So, know better and learn better with resources like the white paper link below. Then you can do better and help others do the same. www.overlayfalseclaims.com
Truth in advertising does not exist for overlay vendors False claims at the expense of customers and persons with disabilities.

Pinterest has introduced a new artificial intelligence tool that allows users to filter search results based on body type. The filter starts with a "visual prompt to choose between four body ranges". “Pinterest is a visual discovery platform and we want users to be able to see themselves reflected in their search results,” said Sabrina Ellis, Chief Product Officer at Pinterest. “That’s why we are leveraging AI to bring greater inclusion to our product design. So far, it is available in the US only for women's fashion and wedding-related categories, but the company plans to expand it to men's fashion later. Pinterest representatives note that this step makes their site "more inclusive." Nevertheless, with 16 body types, it is difficult to adapt each type, even with the use of AI, and the function of saving the selection was not noticed during testing. #DevITGroup #IT #Technology #WebDevelopment #Programming #itservices

📅 Weekly Recap! A ton of insightful content was shared on LinkedIn last week. You probably missed some things, so here are a few items that are worth calling out! --- Last week was International Day of Women and Girls in Science. To celebrate, Sarah Shaibu shared some things she’s been able to accomplish with a STEM degree. However, Sarah noted some statistics showing how far there is still to go: Only 28% of women fill STEM-related roles, and only 5% are in leadership roles. Check out Sarah’s post and share how STEM has helped our career! https://lnkd.in/gd4e8ksZ --- Last week, I talked with author and design leader Dan Mall about some things he wishes junior designers would know sooner. This episode is full of nuggets from start to finish. Don’t miss it! https://lnkd.in/g72RVafw --- Marina Krutchinsky shared that one of the best ways to grow your UX skills is to expose yourself to things that are “slightly unfamiliar.” It's not something you can’t do at all, but things that feel challenging, yet you know you can do. Marina digs more into it in her post. I seriously love this advice. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/gJc4RgFV --- Last week, we did something slightly different and took a request. Michal Wisniowski requested Acquiescence Bias. This is where we tend to agree to things we don’t really know the answer to. This bias can significantly impact the reliability of survey responses and research findings. This one is HUGE for software teams. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/gFM98Ybp --- Jane Li shared some mistakes she made with her first portfolio. She also shares some tips to avoid these common pitfalls when working on your portfolio, like starting with an outline and highlighting your impact. Don’t make the same mistakes. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/gRZipxXF --- What did I miss? Do you have anything interesting that you found last week? Share it in the comments! #WeeklyRecap #UXdesign

Can you believe your eyes? We were testing the current navigation this week on EE website (in preparation for some big changes). Ironically, the only participant who could find everything on the website happened to be completely blind. All other participants, who didn’t have any disabilities, got lost and side-tracked at different stages. The accessibility team has done an amazing job setting a blind person up for success. But also, from an IA point of view, everything was there: if you can find products and services with your eyes closed, they are definitely there if you open them, aren’t they? The only difference I can see is that a blind customer will, by default, get a focused, task-oriented experience with no distractions (by using a screen reader). Those who can see, however, also have to deal with all the marketing offers, design inconsistencies, wrong navigation patterns, which all together are adding up to a great deal of distractions. This research was very thought-provoking for me. I am curious to find people here, especially designers who work in IA, navigation, or search areas, and chat. It’s an interesting and complex topic on how to reduce disorientation in the era of information overload, especially when it comes to products used by millions of customers and built by tons of people with different things in mind. So if this sounds familiar to you or you know someone who works in navigation and would like to chat, let’s connect and discuss, share books, knowledge and best practices :) Adel Kalman thanks a lot for moderating these brilliant research sessions!

Did You Know? Voice Search is Changing Accessibility! Voice-activated search is rapidly becoming a game-changer in how people interact with the digital world. As this technology becomes more widespread, ensuring your website is accessible has never been more crucial. Accessible websites, with clear structures and properly tagged content, are far more compatible with voice search systems like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. This means that users with disabilities or anyone who prefers voice commands can easily navigate and find information. By designing for accessibility, you not only enhance user experience but also future-proof your site as technology continues to evolve. Are your digital assets ready for the voice search revolution? #Accessibility #VoiceSearch #DigitalInclusion #WebAccessibility #InclusiveDesign #FutureOfTech #UserExperience #AssistiveTechnology
