"Breaking into the games industry" feels like a dangerous term. I see it used everywhere, but here are the flaws: - It sounds desperate: "I'd do anything... I just want to work in games!" This prioritizes the *idea* of working in games over the *work* of working in games. It's an employer's market, but they still need workers. - It's not helpful: This is more important than the last one. Don't mind sounding desperate? That's fine. But you should mind if you don't sound valuable or helpful. Think about it from the company's point of view. If *you* don't know what you want to do -- "I just want to break in!" -- then how can they place you? How can you be an asset? - It's tired: I'm writing this post because I see those words so often. That also means it's tired and boring and doesn't separate you from the next candidate. If you lead with an objective of "I just want to work in games," then you have set a goal equal or worse to everyone else who is applying. They all want to work in games, too. My suggestion of what to do instead? Drop the phrase entirely, pick what you *actually want to do* in games, work on those skills relentlessly as you continue to apply, and then lead with that message. Here's mine: I want to continue designing the player's experience through story, actions, characters, and gameplay. I am passionate about bringing these together and collaborating with multiple departments to make it work. If I had no experience doing this, I would simply change "continue designing" to "design" and that's it. Your words matter. After more than 10 years of dreaming and watching others, I am FINALLY GOING TO DO IT NOW: create a 'real' game and release it on Steam! Since graduating (in 2010!), I have been shaping my career around creating serious games. This hasn't been easy, especially for my own company Studio Rightside. It all started with a minor in serious games by Niels Floor, followed by internships at IJsfontein and Shapers. To this day, I continue to create beautiful games at Shapers as learning experiences for clients like Veilig Verkeer Nederland, European Investment Bank (EIB), and Dedicon - Huis van Toegankelijkheid. For the past few years, I've also been getting serious applied game projects. For example, I created an impressive onboarding board game for Vandebron, and in collaboration with Sterk Huis and Kinderpostzegels, I am working on my biggest and most beautiful serious game to date, The Gate! My career as a serious game designer is heading in the right direction. I am incredibly happy and proud, especially with the positive impact these games bring. Creating serious games is and will remain my profession, my passion, my future, my way of making a positive impact. And yet... a feeling has been stirring in me for years to release a 'real' game again. Not for a target audience, client, or positive impact, but simply because I want to. And I can hear you thinking: why haven't you done that before? Well, that's why: ⚠️ It's risky business: only the top 5% of games earn a decent (or very good) income. 🕒 I have little time: I work at Shapers, have my own company, and also have a wife, 2 children, family, and friends. 💪 It's a lot of work! 🦥 Because I've been postponing it: watching other game developers or tutorials is much easier. 🔦 I'll have to put myself in the spotlight: there are soooo many games that thorough marketing is simply necessary. If you know me a little, you know that I'm not the type who likes to be in the limelight. This is my biggest challenge. But it's also the one from which I'll learn the most. And yet, I'm going to do it NOW: For several months now, every Friday, I've been working with Bob Huijbregts under our new studio name Upgraded Studio on our first Steam game Binary Barrier! Think of the classic Space Invaders but with dark science-fiction twist and tower defense gameplay (with some roguelite randomness). I'm very excited about this gamedev adventure with Bob Huijbregts. I wanted to start sharing the work I’ve done in the past couple of months. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made with my Third Person Adventure Template. This will serve as a base template for my future games. In this first part I developed an Interaction System where the Player can look around and interact with any object around. I focused specifically on objects the Player can grab physically with their hands, I think this makes it more interesting to explore and interact with the environment The Player can examine objects with an Item Examiner Component and the information is displayed with minimal UI. I chose to remove as much UI as possible to avoid interruptions because of menu switching. This is also why the Health Bar is on the back of the character. This interaction system works as a base for everything in the project and is expanded to things like Buttons, Doors, Ammo, Weapons, NPCs, Consumables, Key Items etc. I think it makes for a more immersive and fun exploration. #OpenToWork #gamedevelopment #gamedev #TechDesign #unrealengine #UE5 #gameindustry #indiedev #videogames #gamesjobs

As I reflect on my journey in game development, I've encountered both rewarding and challenging experiences. Over the past few months, I've been part of a project that has tested my limits in ways I never anticipated 🫧 One of the most significant takeaways from this experience has been the opportunity to dive into new areas of game development. I've learned to work with particle systems, VFX graphs, Shader graphs (even creating textures for cool visual effects), an intensive amount of redesigning documentation, and I even picked up some FMOD — skills I didn't expect to acquire during our final project. These experiences have been invaluable to me, and I'm proud of the progress I've made in these areas, especially since it wasn't something that I was taught but had to pick up at a moments notice 🌱 However, this journey hasn't been without it's difficulties. Working with a diverse team has highlighted the importance of clear communication and mutual respect. Unfortunately, there were times when this alignment was missing, leading to frustration, setbacks and cut content. One of the hardest parts has been dealing with unprofessional behavior. It's been a test of my patience, empathy and my usual quiet demeanor, but I've learned to stand up for myself and address issues head-on; something I would have never been able to do a year ago if I'm being honest. So I'm glad for the difficulties as well as the successes, as they've been helping me not only grow as a designer and a problem solver but also to become someone who speaks up when things were frustrating or uncomfortable. There were many late nights and early mornings, often working until 3am and starting again at 5am, to help my team get ahead when we were behind. This experience has reinforced the importance of adaptability for me. The late nights, so I could learn a new skill or overcome a challenge, and the early mornings to prep for the day and assign tasks based on the progress of the previous days. I also want to highlight the invaluable support of my level designer, Cole Webster. His level-headedness and unwavering support helped me feel grounded and reassured during many challenging moments. He always made me feel like I wasn't going through this alone. I really want to thank him and will always appreciate him as a friend but also as an incredible designer (Seriously he has cool ideas and always delivers!! 💫). As we approach our graduation, I carry with me newfound knowledge and skills that feel rewarding and give me a sense of success and direction. I'm proud of my personal growth and the new skills I've developed. ~~~ And to anyone facing similar challenges, remember that your own personal growth and dedication, are what truly matters. Keep pushing forward, embrace new learning opportunities, and be proud of your achievements; because through the midst of everything, it'll shine through. There's merit there in your hard work and people will see it, so own it! ✨️

Recruitment into game development is a many-tentacled thing in 2024. You might decide to study a degree in one of its specific disciplines, or enroll in the university of YouTube and have a crack at some amateur projects with a view to building up your portfolio. There are masterclasses with legendary industry figures. There are internships and game jams. In 1998, there was UnrealEd. If you're struggling with the idea of creating video games as a way of a professional life, you're not alone. Even though everybody knows the difficulty of the market conditions, I didn't realize how big the struggle of many is to move their gaming ideas into reality or dream about having a solid job in the industry. Creating video games is not about the destination but about the path and the happiness and rewards you get in the process. Some of you might be undecisive if this is exactly what you're looking for, but taking the words from the Morpheus in the Matrix "You have a splinter in your mind driving you mad." As in The Matrix, not everybody is ready to take a step into the gaming industry, and the reality is that it is not easy if you don't find the orientation needed. I connect intensely with the character of Neo because I felt many times in my life looking for something different. Sadly for me, I didn't have a master who could tell me how to get out and do the correct things. I had to do it by myself and discovered many years later what is the strategy to follow. Today, not defined by my successes but by many failures, I have the perspective of a successful entrepreneur and a professional in the area that inspires me so much that I can't wait for Monday to come to continue "working."
