Today marks World Maritime Day, September 26, a day dedicated to celebrating the maritime and shipping industries that play a vital role in fostering global trade, peace, and international collaboration.
Each year, shipping accounts for nearly 90% of all goods, food, energy, and industrial products transported across countries, fulfilling essential needs and comforts for humanity.
Since the dawn of civilization, ships have been crucial in connecting societies and facilitating travel across continents. Nations with more ports and vessels have historically enjoyed stronger economies, greater political influence, and deeper global integration.
I began my career journey as a marine engineering cadet in the Merchant Navy, where my ship became my entire world, and the world became my ship.
This profession taught in me values of order, discipline, teamwork, and self-reliance. Traveling globally has broadened my appreciation for human diversity, international cooperation, and respect for various cultures. Experiencing the beauty of pristine oceans and clear skies deepened my understanding of the importance of preserving our environment and protecting all forms of life.
Let us unite in promoting global cooperation and socioeconomic integration to realize our collective visions, hopes, and dreams for humanity’s progress and prosperity. We must recognize the significance of every constructive human endeavor in advancing our journey on this planet. Together, let’s cultivate life and peace, halt destruction and conflict, and challenge those who perpetuate such cycles.
As we celebrate World Maritime Day each year, may we continue to achieve advancements in knowledge, technology, and strengthen work towards our shared noble aspirations and goals for the common good for humanity.
