Annual Giving March- week 4: It's the end of quarter 1. Whether we like it or not, 1/4 of the year is now behind us. That means that very soon you are going to be asked by your supervisor or board of directors to provide an update on your annual giving program. How you present your results sets the stage for what happens next. If you focus on reporting on the total dollars raised, it will be a short conversation. Total dollars raised is a lagging indicator of success. What I mean, is that you are reporting on actions already taken. It doesn't promote conversation or participation from others. If you talk about leading indicators of success you can invite participation from your supervisor or your board of directors. A good way to start the conversation is by reporting on a metric like dependency quotient. This metric gives you a chance to look at the top 5-10 funding partners to your organization and to do a deep dive into what their giving means to your organization right now and how it might impact your organization in the future. First you need to understand more about the top 5-10 funding partners to your organization in the past 5 years. Once you have run this report, dig deep into your relationship with these partners. And end this by asking yourself, what would happen if this funding didn't happen this year (or next year etc.). This will give you some insight into how important this funding partner is to your mission. Here's how you use this information to invite participation from your organizational leadership, or board of directors. What did you discover? - Maybe you found a relationship that needs mending - this is an opportunity to see if there is someone connected to your organization that can help re-engage with this partner. - Maby you don't know one of these partners- what a great time to see if someone can make an introduction for you. - Maybe you know that a relationship is going to end (grant partner and the funding will end) now you know that you need to do some prospecting. Ask leadership and your board for ideas of potential new partners. See how the conversation changes because of the data that you are reporting. Let me know how it works. Recently I decided to take a step out of my comfort zone.... I took a chance on change. It paid off more than I could have dreamed. Setting a tone for the week kind of question for you – how do you look at your success? We live in a world where bigger numbers, complex metrics, and pretty performance dashboards hold a lot of power to dictate our success. But what if we dared to redefine success? What if we attempted to view success in progress—not by the milestones reached but by humanity in connections formed? Every individual I meet from our sector—volunteers, part-time staff, fundraisers, and EDs—is a leader in themselves when they balance their intentions, actions, and expectations amidst the change from the sociopolitical happenings around us. I have heard them articulate their work to the basics, like connection, compassion, and courage. When they measure themselves against raw numbers and feelings of inadequacy creep up, I want us to go back to the fundamentals and ask: How do we look at success? Are we truly measuring what matters? To all my nonprofit friends, remember: The world doesn't just need leaders; it needs leaders who are unafraid to be human, to feel deeply, and to ignite change that resonates on a profoundly human level. So, ● your success metrics can be few, ● data collection on those metrics can be simple, ● and those metrics are about what you do, not who you are. Let's learn to celebrate our actions, which will teach us to measure right outcomes. Because what we measure (and how we measure) are not just what allows us to do more but be more—for our communities, world, and ourselves. #nonprofits #nonprofitleadership #community

👀 Ever wake up and wonder how your organization got where it is today? The place where it's big but success is getting blurry and all the numbers point to a slow decline. Not so bad that it's alarming but so little no one thinks it's an issue. The process and systems are so entrenched and dialed in that your team can't see into the future and likes the comfort of today. This is what I call "mundane descent" ↘ . The slow decline driven by bureaucracy with in the organization. If you find yourself in that spot here are a few things that can help break that up: ✅ 1. Clear and compelling vision ... but in story form. Short sticky format that people can easily remember. With out this being sticky people won't use it to make day to day decisions. ✅2. Clearly define the problems ... but in story form. Again a short sticky format that people can easily remember. Having the problem always in your mind makes it easier to solve when opportunities arise. ✅3. Kill all the nice to haves. Anything that isn't adding to the future in a meaningful way and ads value to your supporters stop doing. Get ruthless about saying no. Dave Ramsey has a quote "sell so much stuff the kids think they'll be next." Get that ruthless. Saying not isn't just about focus it also provides the constraints needed for innovation. ✅4. Reposition top performers. Shuffling talented staff can bring life to your org in a new way. Giving new eyes to existing problems. ✅5. Pour into your people. Your people will either help sink or float your ship. Invest in them with new learning opportunities and flexibility especially the crazy ones, the ones that seem to mess things up in a good way. These are just 5 ways, but there are plenty more. Don't settle for the mundane descent. The world needs your nonprofit.
