Carpooling doesn't always get much attention in the mode shift conversation, but sharing rides to work and school can alleviate traffic congestion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lessen the demand for parking infrastructure. For shift workers and those working in transit-poor industrial centers, carpooling is often one of the few sustainable travel options and could become a major piece of the transportation puzzle... with the proper support. Employer-based programs are a good start: Guaranteed Rides Home, parking perks, and cash incentives can smooth the way for more workers to carpool. But big change is needed at the policy level, such as legislation that includes carpooling as a qualified fringe benefit. Want to talk more about carpooling and other strategies to help your community achieve a more balanced transportation system? Reach out to our TDM Practice Lead Thomas Cerny, AICP, TDM-CP!
