With the support of The Commonwealth Fund and the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS), I spent several months examining why people in Wisconsin have difficulties in accessing assistive mobility technology, such as wheelchairs and scooters, how those difficulties impact their daily lives, and local legislative pushes to address the problem. My reporting follows the experience of Raquella Freeman, a 32-year-old Milwaukee resident who, for years, has dealt with frequent breaks to her mobility devices. It took almost a year for Medicaid to approve the purchase of Freeman’s power wheelchair and for National Seating and Mobility, one of the nation's two major wheelchair suppliers, to assemble it. The approximately $60,000 power wheelchair arrived in April 2024. After three days of use, the headrest fell off. Shortly after that, so did the footrest. On average, power wheelchairs can take a year to assemble, and repairs can take six weeks or more. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, severe manufacturing backlogs have further slowed down the shipment of parts. Freeman's circumstance reflects a common challenge for people with disabilities: A long, painful wait to get their mobility devices, and even more delays to have them repaired. 📢 Why Assistive Technology Matters in Early Childhood Development A recent brief by ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology sheds light on the profound impact of Assistive Technology (AT) interventions, such as those used in clubfoot treatment, emphasising their significance not just in the present moment but also in shaping long-term outcomes for individuals and their families. “Assistive technology interventions can have a long-term economic impact for individuals and their carers and families.” We estimate that clubfoot treatment unleashes $120,000 in regained earnings over the life of the child - extraordinary given the global average treatment cost is currently $467 per child. Reflection on #assistive devices: A child's development depends partly on factors within the body, partly on the tasks they are given to solve, and partly on the environment. Assistive devices are one such environmental factor - what does the standing support look like? Am I standing on my own feet and feeling the ground? Can I "sway" a bit, bend my knees, or am I completely locked in place? How can I remove parts of the support I need to learn and develop? Or am I constantly given so much support that I'm not challenged? Obvious questions? Maybe not, as the availability of assistive devices varies greatly in Sweden. In some regions, certain assistive devices are provided, while in others they are not. In some regions, you cannot get "training aids," which are designed with adjustable settings to make tasks more challenging as the child learns. Why not? On the other hand, it's possible to receive entirely passive assistive devices that we know worsen the child's function – this happens daily! No one reacts. I see millions being pumped into medical research to cure various diseases, which is good. But when it comes to physical disabilities, medicine doesn't cure; it's training and teaching the brain to control the body. Where is the development of assistive devices? Technology? Learning perspectives, feedback, etc.? Where is the funding for this, and who is responsible? I was asked this question, and I couldn't answer. I believe that children with physical disabilities are being discriminated against – not having the right to "medicine," that is, training aids, is wrong and needs to change.

Innovations were trendy, and legislation was slow to respond. Today, the market for new vehicles, including inventions, has become increasingly regulated every year. This increased regulation allows time for thorough safety testing, government rule-making, and insurers to adapt to new risks. The invention in the video, despite its marketed convenience, was discontinued due to safety concerns. Bicycle sidecars are less stable compared to other child transport options like bike trailers or bike seats. Attaching a sidecar can make the bicycle harder to balance and control, increasing the risk of tipping over, especially on uneven or rough terrain. Additionally, there was a shift in consumer preferences towards safer and more practical child transport options, such as bike trailers, bike seats, and cargo bikes.
