Our Projects - Cold Storage & Solar lights for small Traders in Roadside Agro-markets Over 5 million small-scale traders (women & men) sell their farm produce near the main cross-country roads. These small traders sell fresh harvests from their small farms to millions of travelers in the country daily. Some of these are smallholders who have benefited from the use of #solar powered irrigation that increased farm yields and lowered the cost of production. However, the roadside markets they use are often makeshift with no services such as electricity, sanitation, cold storage facilities or shade/shelter. This initiative aims to provide solar street lights and solar powered refrigerators to roadside entrepreneurs along the Highways to improve market access for their produce and allow them to sell their produce both day and night. New solar power scheme announced by central govt talks to people who can invest. There is a big market with small farmers who want cheaper options of irrigation. During farmer interactions we found they were aprehensive about performance. Small cloud floating for less than a minute slows down the pump.size of panels to be carried, how about theft and vandalism. can there be a Panchati model. previous irrigation schemes like state tube well, small canals have failed, electricity is unpredictable. Govt claims do not account for breakdowns that run into days at times. Petrol Diesel is best fool proof answer.we at Rural campus are learning new challenges that needs to be addressed in communication.

Today at solar and storage: talking about the potential of solar energy in electrification of agricultural processes and equipment: when we speak about the agricultural sector, its looked at as the sector the can be used through carbon credit trading to wash other dirty sectors, but to do so this sector shall firstly decarbonize itself. Two areas to do that , through solar power and storage solutions is the solar based irrigation systems which was widely adopted by the private sector in Egypt through the last decade, the other area is the electrification of farm equipment and agricultural processes , and I think this will be smoothly adopted as its an extension of solar irrigation systems, and I think the right circumstances for such transformation is about to happen ,especially with the breakthroughs in battery technology and the lower prices for battery packs as recently announced by some Chinese manufacturers to reach a lower than 45 usd /kwhr with exceptional life time. I have a degree in Theological Stidies and I can understand the logic of why shade over a canal prevents evaporation and the water creates a cooling effect that boosts the efficiency of of the panels. I can also very easily comprehend that the panels don’t have to be at water level to achieve this. This isn’t even the hard stuff that needs doing! If this is the level of discourse at this stage of the game then it’s clear that we needed to start 50 years ago.
I'm trying to understand how Canal-spanning solar panels "on our canal system is a smart solution to our growing water and energy dilemas" What happens when the water level rises? When something gets stuck in the canal? How does that solar "canopy" stretched across a canal get maintained and repaired? Can y'all explain this to me?
