In much of the world, almost all of the broadband in and out goes through the undersea fibers. Most of us take this for granted. But what happens when one of these fibers is damaged or cut as an act of retaliation? This is an interesting read from CCG's blog Pots and Pans, discussing what it takes to keep the internet alive worldwide. #broadband #fiber #underwaterfiber Douglas Dawson https://lnkd.in/g6mCznpU

Widespread problems were affecting the internet in South Africa on Thursday due to multiple undersea cable breaks. “Multiple undersea cable failures between South Africa and Europe are currently impacting South Africa’s network providers, including Vodacom,” Vodacom spokesman Byron Kennedy told TechCentral at 2.22pm on Thursday. Multiple sources have told TechCentral that there has been an undersea incident impacting multiple cables along Africa’s west coast. According to Microsoft, four cables have been affected. One source said the break may have occurred off the coast of Abidjan, the capital of the Ivory Coast One source said the break may have occurred off the coast of Abidjan, the capital of the Ivory Coast in West Africa. The main internet cables that connect South Africa to Europe run along the west coast of Africa, including the West Africa Cable System (Wacs) and Google’s Equiano cable. According to Microsoft, the affected cables are Wacs, MainOne, Sat-3 and Ace. This is the second time in seven months that a major cable break along Africa’s coastline has severely impacted internet services in South Africa. And the latest outage could not have come at a worse time, given that the Seacom cable, which connects South Africa to Europe along Africa’s east coast, was recently severed in the Red Sea, possibly as the result of a ship’s anchor. Repairs to the Seacom cable will take time as a result of the geopolitical instability in the region.

Telecom and tech companies are changing the way they send internet data due to recent events in the Red Sea. Reports suggest that undersea cables were damaged by an abandoned ship targeted by Houthi rebels. This disruption affects internet connections between the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe. The Red Sea is a major route for international data travel, with cables handling trillions of dollars in transactions daily. Several companies, including HGC Global Communications and Seacom, have had to reroute traffic due to the damage. While some telecom firms downplay concerns, experts warn that cable damage happens frequently, usually from anchors or fishing trawlers. Although most countries have backup cables, severe disruptions could occur if multiple high-capacity cables are damaged. If all cables were cut, it could impact video calls, financial trades, and cloud applications. Efforts are underway to repair the cables but companies may face delays and quality issues with internet services until then. #telecommunications #internet #informationsecurity
