Buying software can really suck. This is a text I received from a friend who is trying to buy right now. He was heated. "It's still a million questions." Qualification should not be a round of 20 questions. Save that for your next game of Guess Who. It also highlights that tailoring with basic research isn't enough. Total table stakes that doesn't earn you the right to add a 12th question. What do we think this common buying experience is a product of? Over engineering qualification? The fear of demo + ghosting? Discomfort qualifying while demoing? #sales #discovery #qualification

People don’t buy software because of its feature list. The real reason they buy is simple: They want a tool that will improve their life in some tangible way. Maybe it’s saving them time, helping them organize complex data, or generating leads. And if you actually deliver on that promise? Or better yet, if you go above and beyond? Now, you have more than a customer. You have a fan. And fans generally don’t keep their fandom to themselves. They tell others about how your software made their life better, and they’re the first in line when you launch a new product or service. So if your product pitch revolves around listing all the amazing features your software, stop it 🛑. Instead, start showing your audience how those features can make their world better. Then make good on that promise! #salesengineering #techsales #productmarketing #softwareengineer

Multithreading used to scare me. I've lost my fair share of deals to being singlethreaded. "What if I piss off my champion?" "I don't want to step on anyone's toes." "What if I kill my deal??" 😨 But I learned that's the wrong way to think about it. Instead, think about it like this: 💡Multithreading 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘶𝘺𝘦𝘳, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘫𝘰𝘣💡 Organizations buy software relatively frequently (becoming less frequent now, by the way), but individual leaders may not. And buying your software is 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 their top priority. But you're a 𝘱𝘳𝘰 at selling your product. It's literally all you do. (That's why it's called "being a professional") It's your job to help them to a decision (yay or nay). So, getting the right people involved at the right times makes everyone's jobs easier. Yours, theirs, procurement's. Everyone's. My favorite tip for multithreading? 👉 Start before your first call 👈 Book a call with a Director of Sales? Before the call, reach out to some reps on their team + their VP. --- To the reps: "Hey [Name], fellow AE here doing some prep work. One of your directors booked a call with us for Thursday. I imagine she's thinking about [Problem]. Any chance you're experiencing something like that? Would love your insight." --- To the VP: "[Name], a director from your team booked a call with us for next week. Sounds like [Problem] might be a priority. We'll be discussing its impact on [Metric] and the specific risk to [Org]. Will send notes afterward and keep you in the loop. PS: Happy to make time if it makes sense to connect on this." --- Set the tone and expectation from day 1 that you will be multithreading (appropriately) throughout the process. Always ask permission later, if you're unsure about reaching out to a new person. But at least show that multithreading is the default, not the exception. Want to get better at multithreading? "Demand validation" is a fancy, useless phrase that needs to go away. There's only one way to "validate" demand in the real world: Sell. Then, retain. Here's how you waste years and tons of money when you think you've "validated" demand: → You build too much product → You raise too much money → You hire the wrong team → You try to scale prematurely → You do "all the right things," but it just doesn't translate to traction etc. HERE'S WHAT TO DO INSTEAD: 1 - Know that the only way to "validate" demand is to repeatedly sell & retain customers 2 - Craft your sales & delivery process around a case study, not *just* your product (see my previous posts about this) 3 - Debug the case study to get to "pull" and figure out the shape of demand - example below Is there any other way?? -- PS - PMF Camp 3 starts April 1, DM for more info!

Every software developer ought to try selling what they build. The "if you build it, they will come" mentality discounts the efficacy of good sales and marketing campaigns. It downplays the discovery of potential users who would benefit from the product. Even worse is when developers presume that the market of interested buyers exists in the first place. My last gig before becoming a professional software engineer was as a business development representative (BDR) for a SaaS company. I'd total 80-100 cold calls a day, often to people who either didn't pick up or didn't want to talk to me. From the aggregate came a small group of interested companies with good market fit, who eventually became customers. I wouldn't have learned the difference between good and bad product fit without those raw conversations. It shaped my development and sales approach to this day. I'm more concerned with what users need (what problem to solve) and if what I build satisfies and delights. When you develop a product in isolation, presuming that the users will just show up one day, you are wasting your time. Find out who those users are, strike up a call or conversation, and find the root of their problem. If you solve it, THEN they will come. #webdev #software #bdr #sales #marketing

Next video in the Intellyx #ZohoDay24 interview series with Jason Yoffy of RJG, Inc. As a #supplychain #PLM geek I really dug how his company can rapidly design, specify materials and settings, and train partners and customers on precise plastic #injectionmolding -- and leave the #processmanagement and sales/support to Zoho. I won't even talk about the outsized #ROI generated here. #developmentstories #customer story. Watch/listen.
