Beyond Thunderdome: VO2 Max
It might sound like a character or device found in a Mad Max movie, but VO2 Max is an entirely different beast.
It’s the maximum absorption and deployment of oxygen a person can use during exercise.
Aside from competitive runners, swimmers, and professional athletes in other sports, why -- you may ask -- is it something you should know?
Well, it’s a good indicator of your current cardiovascular and pulmonary health and how long you might live.
To get the most accurate assessment of that, a person is hooked up to equipment in a clinical setting -- including a mask to measure one’s breathing -- and they then run on a treadmill for a set amount of time or distance.
Since most people don’t have access to that, two manual substitutes are the Rockport Walking Fitness Test and the Cooper 12-Minute Run Test.
For the RWFT, you walk briskly for a mile and then input your data into an online calculator (such as this one: https://lnkd.in/dkribiSn)
For the C12RT, you run as far as you can -- yes, for 12 minutes -- and then enter your data into an online calculator (like this one: https://lnkd.in/dmSiJiVB)
I’m going to try both and see how they compare -- as well as how I compare to the average of men roughly my age (60).
If you’re a seasoned runner, you should try both.
If not, try the walking one and see how you measure up.
It might give you a good indication of how much longer you might live…
As well as your chances of running away from trouble in a Mad Max movie.
