Last week, our colleagues Christy Tulen and Nadia Honing had the opportunity to attend the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA) conference in Odense. It was enlightening to explore best practices in research management and learn more about how AI is revolutionizing both pre- and post-award processes. The event was a great platform to expand and strengthen our professional network. Here are some key takeaways: ⏩ MOMENTUM: The field of research management and administration is evolving swiftly, driven by changes in research assessment, career pathways, open science, and data management. 🤖 AI IN RESEARCH: The development and integration of AI tools is transforming impact strategy development, evaluation of applications and how research is conducted. 🎯 IMPACT ASSESSMENT: Insights on how to innovate impact assessment methods to better capture the value and influence of research. Amazing first day at the Corpolinx WDEI Summit - as a (formally) new(ish) DEI human (long time subscriber, though) there was a lot to think about. Some of my key questions and considerations from today that will keep my mind mulling over: 🎶 Samantha Webster made me wonder why all summits don't start with a rendition of 'Shout' and more importantly how can we work towards culture add, rather than culture fit. ℹ Kylie McGavin spoke about the importance of linking DEI metrics with performance data - a real challenge in healthcare! 🔊 Jude Batrac made me rethink the relationship between storytelling and statistics, as well as defining the role of ERGs as voices rather than relying on them to drive systemic change. 🎯 Sahera Sumar got right to the point on the Urgency of Pluralism, with some sobering stats about Australia's efforts in Sustainable Development Goal 10. 🧠 Clare Edwards (FIML) walked us through the common biases that impact our decision making, and challenged me to think about how my thousands year old neural pathways might be getting in the way of my values. 🤖 Yvonne Kelly reminded us that AI is not always the answer, but with considered involvement in the deign phase, it can certainly help! I'm taking away from Day 1 more questions than answers (but that is exactly where I should be at the moment) and also a sense of thanks to people who let me know they got something out of my Alice in Wonderland trip through DEI.

It's #AI Week in Chicago! Xiaochen Z., Gilbert Villegas, Kristi Dula-Ferguson, Dinis Guarda, Eva Szalkai Csaky, and I had a great panel discussion today about Leveraging AI for Regional Economic Growth. So many great points were made, too bad we ran out of time. Some key takeaways are: ✅ Governments need to develop pro-growth policies to attract business and talent ✅ #Community is at the heart of any ecosystem. Having all the right people at the table will help ensure success. ✅ #Illinois is open for business ✅ In-person events like Chicago AI Week act as an opportunity to share ideas and build excitement Thanks to Xiaochen for organizing an important event and 1871 for hosting!

📅On Thursday, December 14th, DRI’s Digital Democracy team held their retrospective webinar, This Year in Digital Democracy: The Disinformation Trends and Technologies of 2023! 💬The event kicked off with a presentation by Duncan Allen on the major shifts the Digital Democracy team has observed in the disinformation landscape, as well as an overview of the work we published this year investigating 2023’s emerging technologies and threats. 📢Next up was a discussion between Jan N. Beyer and Jacobo Castellanos over the impact generative AI has had on civil society. In it, Mr. Castellanos offered insight into how organisations like WITNESS are adapting to emerging technologies by employing AI tools in their journalistic and advocacy work. 🎙️Finally, DRI researcher Beatriz Saab moderated a discussion panel between Dr. Sebastian Hallensleben, Wafaa Heikal, and Jacobo Castellanos on the expected future trends and technologies of 2024. During the panel, the experts emphasised that artificial technologies are here to stay, and will not only increase in widespread use and sophistication, but also lead to a pollution of online spaces with an excess of synthetic content. The speakers stressed the need for civil society to remain vigilant towards generative AI, employing it responsibly while remaining aware of its risks. Interested in hearing more? AI for Developing Countries Forum took place in Vienna, Austria, on the 17th and 18th of July 2024. After many inspiring talks and interesting panels these questions remain open to me: ⚖️ Can justice still be justice in absence of explicit human empathy? 🌾 How can we harness the potential of AI to manage the transition to tech-driven business cases without (completely) disrupting current analog systems in developing countries? 💡 What strategies can be employed to establish networking structures that foster grassroots movements? 🌍 How can we create ecosystems where societies collaborate and benefit from value-based, human-centric, and exploitation-free AI technologies?
