If you think profits alone can sustain a company for 100 years, I’ve got news for you… It’s the people. Melanie Dulbecco, CEO of Torani (R. Torre & Co.), led the company to $500 million in revenue while maintaining a 100-year tradition of never laying off employees. How? By replacing outdated performance reviews with a growth-oriented system and creating a culture where employees can explore different roles. This only goes to show that when you invest in your people, you build a company that can weather any storm, including a global pandemic. Interested in learning more? Contribution instead performance evaluation, sounds simple but is an extraordinary change of mindset for the organization, is one of the key elements
Cannot wait to listen to this. It's so impressive they've gone nearly a century without layoffs that I'm actually speechless. Kudos to Melanie Dulbecco and her team!
Jacob, this is an inspiring testament to the power of a people-first culture! Torani's success under Melanie Dulbecco’s leadership truly shows that when you prioritize your employees' growth and well-being, you not only foster loyalty and engagement but also drive long-term business success. The innovative shift from traditional performance reviews to a growth-focused system is particularly commendable. This story reinforces that sustainable success is built on the foundation of investing in people. Thanks for sharing this powerful example!
More great content and suggestions from Jacob Morgan. I would suggest that this has to start with leadership training and development to help mid level managers understand the essence of their role in a people centered culture and the skills to make it happen as well as the knowledge and tactics on how to support employee needs. Amazing what succees can be enjoyed when there is a commitment to and focus on employees well being and future.
Every corporation should take note of this. It has been my belief that if a company takes good care of their employees, their business will grow and prosper organically. Happy and motivated employees drive growth.

2moJacob Morgan totally agree. And Torani's talent development principles also align with behavior science: 1. employees are motivated by 1. opportunity to have an impact; 2. autonomy and empowerment to have some control over HOW they accomplish what they are assigned to do (which can lead to innovation and efficiency) and 3. to develop deep skills and progress in their chosen field. If organizations aren't clear on how each employee's role contributes to the larger team and organizational goals, they're leaving lots of performance potential on the table and risking their high performers leaving. 2. annual or even bi-annual feedback doesn't work to engage talent or develop people and performance. Feedback needs to be related to expectations and as soon after the performance as possible. And, managers need the skills and time to coach top performance. 3. behaviors and skills are great, but accomplishments and contribution to the team and the company are the bottom-line drivers of success.
