You shouldn’t have to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes to understand their job and role as a leader. I’ve never held a software engineering role, but I worked very hard to understand their needs and their job. Some technical skill is needed, but not always at the code level. (Note: I am talking as a leader, not as their direct manager – for that role, I do believe you should have some experience.) When I worked in a warehouse, we had conflicts with the people on the sales floor. Our manager had a great idea – we would shadow them on the sales floor for a day, and they’d help in the warehouse. What could go wrong? I admit I learned a lot from the sales team. However, as a salesperson was unloading two washing machines from a truck, he almost had one fall on his head – I was able to deflect it just before it hit (the washer was destroyed, the sales person was fine). You don’t need to DO the job to understand the job.

Top advice for building a successful corporate career...
As a junior buyer, I got a LOT of advice. 99% of it was a waste of time. But this one piece of advice changed my career: “Choose your boss, over your job title or your company” When I started out at the Co-op, I had an awesome boss who - made work fun - set clear expectations - valued my perspective - prioritised my time over his - led by permission not authority - believed in me even when I didn't - said ‘well done’ and ‘thank you’ often Company culture, job titles, salaries, they're not unimportant. But there's only one factor that's really going to accelerate your career... The person who should want you to succeed the most.

Supply Chain Director @ Petrofac | Procurement Leader for Oil & Gas Onshore, Offshore and New Energy Industry.
STRATEGIC PROCUREMENT The other day, my wife took me to a jewelry shop - Tanishq. She selected a piece of necklace, declared to the salesman that she wanted to buy only this piece (SINGLE SOURCE). She turned to me and said, “It’s your turn to finalize the deal.” She believes, as a procurement manager by profession, I can negotiate better in a jewelry shop as well. I failed miserably (LIMITED LEVERAGE). Gold prices are rising (FIXED MATERIAL COST), and they are fixed. The only leverage you have is over the making charges. I negotiated from 31% to 25%, moving the needle by AED 540 on the gold jewelry worth AED 42,300. She was disappointed. “You cannot negotiate. What do you do in the office?” I needed to explain to her, “dear, I do not do cheap bargaining. As part of my job, I decide what to buy, when to buy, where to buy, and how to buy.” Your role in procurement is just limited to CLERK / POSTMAN, if others in your team make decisions. Team work with no leverage to procurement does not help. Do you do strategic procurement or cheap bargaining? #procurement #supplychain
