The Detroit Lions haven't won any kind of Championship since 1957. In that time span, they were never projected to win anything 95% of the time. They have had stars retire early because they weren't winning but they didn't feel the need to put their bodies through the ringer of more football seasons. This is an amazing interview about inclusion from game day staff to the front office and everyone in between, buying into a culture of grit. Shiela Hamp has taken a male dominant role, flipped it on its head and changed a very much losing culture into an amazing thing to watch and for outsiders to visibly see. The Ford family did not sell the Lions but they put ownership in the hands of someone who is competitive, surrounded herself with winning inclusive people and turned the team around in three years. Hamp in 2021 was booed but today she is leading a team of young men who believe in each other and who makes everyone else believe. Leaders matter and being visible matters when owning a team. Nothing says you don't care than by hiding away in some huge office and not being visible to your fans. What struck me most is Chris Spielman, Special Assistant to the owner and CEO, having football 101s with anyone who wants them. This is huge because the frontline staff feels more included. When Hamp said the Allen Park staff and Ford Field staff were disconnected. I feel all the communication that goes on between everyone is better for it. I hopped on the bandwagon, a little while ago. Yesterday in Detroit, in frigid temperatures, you couldn't get close to any bar downtown and some weren't serving food. Little Caesars Arena put the game on and had an impromptu viewing party before they took the ice against Tampa Bay as well. Both Detroit teams won! Culture and who you pick to lead your organization matters and this is proof. Unified communication matters, being visible and repping your team matters. When your owners choose to include and aren't afraid of saying too much to your entire company. It matters. When winning is part of why you want things to change and people buy in at every level. We've got some HUGE news to share - our homegrown superstar Hayden May has leveled up from LAX General Manager to Gameway's brand new Operations Manager! 🚀 Give it up for Hayden, who's been crushing it ever since he joined the squad back in 2021. He took a risk coming aboard to head up our first spot in LAX T6. The expectations were sky high, but Hayden, his leadership, and the whole LAX team absolutely crushed it. Under Hayden's leadership, the LAX team kicked off 2022 by opening an even bigger, busier location in T3. They made it look easy, even with double the space and people to manage. But we know the blood, sweat, and Red Bulls that went into that W. I feel like I’ve been braggin on our kids a bunch lately, but it’s hard not to! Both of them earned and were awarded All-Around MVP’s for their softball and baseball teams this spring. Canaan won 1st in class in the county stock show and Lawson qualified and then took 2nd in his last ever mutton bustin efforts at the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo. And the cool thing is, they understand and acknowledge who the glory belongs to! These things have opened up some deeper dialogue with them both about what to expect next, and how it translates into life and careers. Inky Johnson says, “When talent meets talent, talent is no longer enough.” Then it becomes about mindset, discipline, heart and desire, etc., and working on your craft when nobody else is watching. In life, somebody is always going to be better, someone is always going to be gunning for you, and outcomes ain’t always fair. How you do one thing is how you do everything, and if you’re going to do it, do it all the way. The little things add up and make the difference! #mindset #business #career #sports

On Tuesday during our production meeting I asked our team “do you think guys in the Alabama football locker room or the Michigan locker room just sit around and pat each other on the backs all day?” “Or do you think they hold each other to higher standard and push each other to get better?” The same thing exists in business, it’s the players job to hold the standard of execution, of attitude, of expectations from each other. It’s our job as leaders to help define it, help find people that want be a part of it, put people in the right positions, and then help encourage everyone to hold the line themselves. Great teams are not full of YES men and YES women, they are chalk full of ACCOUNTABLE men and women. So yeah, we get after each other a little bit more than maybe your average company, but it’s in the name of accountability and the desire to be great… not just as individuals but as a great team of great individuals. The Florida Panthers winning their first Stanley Cup as a franchise last night told a tale that we often see in sports. A team that one year comes up just short, claws their way back the next year to win it all. It really demonstrates the learning, growth and drive that can come from defeat, and it should be something that employees and businesses keep in mind if they fall a little short of their goals on the first, or second, or third try. But the key to turning a failure into a success is to make the necessary adjustments, learn from what did not work last time and come back with a better game plan. Depending on the nature of the business, or the type of job, perhaps not everyone does get a multiple chances to learn and succeed, but for most of us, we do. So the next time you're not sure if you should take a chance on something that isn't a lay-up (apologies for mixing hockey and basketball references), or you get dejected because you did not get your desired results, remember the Florida Panthers, and get back on your feet as you're likely to achieve more success the next time out.
