Whether you weathered the storm or are encountering your damaged home for the first time, the experience can be overwhelming, even if the damage is minor. Here are some steps to help guide you through the process after the storm has passed: ⛈️Ensure everyone is safe & communicate with loved ones. ⛈️Do not enter a damaged building unless you are told it’s safe by local officials. ⛈️Do not wade through standing water. ⛈️Avoid downed power lines and assume all lines are live. ⛈️Report downed power lines, fire, or gas leaks to local utility companies. There are quite a few big fires in the Northern Rangelands across the NT and Western QLD at the moment. They are interesting to watch with respect to last years massive fire season. By mid-Oct 2023 huge fires had started on multiple fronts. What we are seeing this year across the NT is quite different. Although it was another wet summer fuel loads remain suppressed by last years fires. A good example of this is a big fire currently burning in remote country East of Lajamanu, West of Renner Springs. This fire has burnt through over 65k Ha and is still moving. However, it is burning almost exclusively country that did not burn last year. The image on the left is a Sentinel2 satellite image from yesterday, on the right shows hotspots and the area burnt in 2023 (orange) of the same fire captured around the same time yesterday (from NAFI). Anticeedant rainfall is important for fuel growth but previous burns possibly more so.

Lightning is a natural phenomenon occurring during electrical storms. Each year, there are an estimated 18,000 fires that are attributed to lightning with over 40% of these involving structures. Two-thirds of lightning fires occur between June & August each year. Just this month our colleagues at the Oak Island Fire Department responded to three lightening strikes within a couple of hours on the same day. And although it is not common for someone to die in a house fire caused by lightening just a few days ago in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. a man, a woman, a child and an unborn child died in a house fire caused by lightening. You can't predict when or where lightening will strike so you need to always be aware of the possibility during an electrical storm. Smell smoke? Hear a loud noise? Smoke Alarm going off? Get out of the house and call 911. #lighteningstrikes #housefirescausedbylightening #oakislandfiredepartment #stoplossllc #firesafety #smokealarms #fireprotection #preventthefirestoptheloss
