Growing food locally can dramatically reduce carbon emissions. Yet, Luxembourg imports the vast majority of its food. 🌿🧺 Fitotech, a new Luxembourg startup using smart hydroponics created by robotics expert Vadim Gabel, may have the key to changing that and making locally grown food even more sustainable. 🚀 “It’s very important to be able to deliver locally so that people can eat fresh herbs every day, and we are not dependent on seasons,” says co-founder Artyom Yukhin adding that this is just the start of their business plan. In 2024, the two reckon they can scale up the production to produce up to 2 tonnes of fresh herbs per month for the Luxembourg market. In the future, the company wants to use the technology to grow other foods, like strawberries, and to sell the hydroponics farm units. Here's a little clip from my visit to their prototype farm. Japanese strawberry varieties are incredibly delicious. There are more opportunities for cultivating specific varieties in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) plant factories and greenhouses. These Japanese strawberry varieties are grown in Japan's local environment and require cold stress during night cycles to achieve high sweetness. With a controlled environment, they can be grown indoors without the use of any harmful chemicals.

When I was working with Toyota, cost reduction was a key focus for every single person in the company. It was a consistent message delivered by senior management at every opportunity. This is an example of one such speech delivered by the CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, Dr Shuhei Toyoda, during my time with Toyota: “Cost reduction must be a fundamental part of our working life at Toyota.
