As this article in The Guardian points out, the effects of climate change are already here. Different controlled environment structures, such as tunnels and glasshouses, can help make farms more resilient to extreme weather events. Growing in glasshouses, our customers are off to a strong start to the season, delivering high-quality berries into the UK market. https://lnkd.in/gawk2Cyr

There is no denying our climate is changing. The question is whether this is part of our planet's natural climate change cycles over the millennia or whether it is human induced, or is it a mixture of both? Whatever the reason, the fact is that our climate IS changing and we need to do something now. From a human perspective the climate scientists are presenting evidence that our activities are accelerating this climate change and one of the primary aspects to mitigate the effects is to reduce green house gas emissions. This requires change in human behaviour and humans don't like change. The link below once again highlights the cost of doing nothing. Net zero is a destination - what we need now is a practical road map which can be broken down into smaller steps so that we can arrive at the end point. OSA can help with getting you on the decarbonisation journey. The journey begins with taking the first step..... #net zero #climate mitigation #climate adaptation

As temperatures reach 21°C in Brighton today, it's a stark reminder of how extreme changes in the weather are disrupting global food supply chains. This is amplifying #foodinsecurity as crops drown and rot in wet soil or dry out from lack of water in high temperatures. Climate change is contributing to #foodwaste, #risingfoodprices and increasing #costofliving. It is easy to recognize 40-degree summers as extreme weather, but when we are used to lots of rain in the UK, I think extreme weather in the form of record rainfall gets overlooked. The link between climate breakdown, low farm yields, and the impending food shortages in the UK is not getting enough attention. ...Dr Paul Behrens, an associate professor of environmental change at Leiden University in the Netherlands, “We should all be extremely concerned. We need to be doing everything to reduce emissions while transforming our food systems. If we don’t … I expect huge turmoil and escalating prices in the next 10 to 20 years. When food prices spiral, we always expect political instability. I wish people understood the urgent climate threat to our near-term food security.' https://lnkd.in/ezKxrEND

The UK's 8th wettest winter, a direct consequence of climate change, is a stark reminder of our warming world's capacity to hold more moisture (about 7% more for every 1.0°Celsius increase in temperature). This excess moisture leads to heavier rainfall, fewer frosts and is challenging our food production systems. Warmer, wetter conditions not only disrupt planting and harvesting but also promote soil erosion and nutrient loss, further straining our farmers' ability to sustain crop yields. As we face these challenges, it's crucial to support our farmers through adopting climate resilient farming practices and encouraging the development of drought and flood resistant crop varieties. Every one of us can contribute by making sustainable food choices and advocating for policies that support agricultural adaptation to climate change. www.terrypaule.com www.myco.net.au #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity #wegrowwater #SustainableFarming #SupportFarmers

Britain's ability to feed itself is set to be reduced by nearly a tenth this year as farmers across the country reel from one of the wettest winters on record, according to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU). “In 2021, the government warned that climate change was the biggest medium to long term threat to our food security. This analysis suggests that it is the biggest risk now, not at some far off point in the future," said Tom Lancaster, land analyst at the ECIU. #supplychain #climatechange #agriculture #weather https://lnkd.in/gaf-Qnjw

Owner, Global Gardens Santa Ynez CA Provisions Store. Santa Barbara County’s 1st EVOO producer, celebrating 25 years. Olive Oil sommelier, author business and cookbooks, public speaker. Taste educator. Caliterranean.
Survey taken by over 4000 olive oil producers globally results in a score of 51 (out of 100) for the 2023 season. While I celebrated what I believe to be my most flavorful year, extra virgin olive oil yield per ton was my worst ever at 126lbs per gallon. Last year: 53 pounds per gallon, the year prior, 46. Climate change and extreme weather have consistently been featured in the olive oil news sector as contributing to high prices. Unfortunately we must raise our per bottle prices in 2024. However our Olive Oil Club prices will remain the same for at least one more year so we can maintain cash flow from that significant core business on which we rely. https://lnkd.in/gVV56GuR
