We need circular economy AND waste management systems that include a final disposal. That is a necessity if we truly aim to protect water, air, soils, and biodiversity. That is needed for our energy and climate transitions. Waste management systems are complex to plan and to operate. The current transition to circular economy tends to distract decision makers from investing in waste management, when the sector actually needs extra support to adequately plan a transition that truly protects nature. Check out the 5 support mechanisms to municipal solid waste mnagement highlighted in the ISWA International Solid Waste Association Technical Note, shared during INC-4 to inspire an annex to the Treaty. Members of ISWA and Partenariat français pour les déchets / French Solid Waste Partnership have contributed to it. 🌍 French Solid Waste Partnership contributed to the production of a Technical Note shared by ISWA International Solid Waste Association during #INC4 held in Ottawa from 23 to 29 April 2024. 💡 Check out this explicit Infographic on the many facets to local waste management: to prevent waste from entering the environment local governments have to support prevention, collect and manage waste to maximize recycling and recovery, as well as ensure a safe final disposal for the waste that remains. This challenging task has to be supported by 5 mechanisms, described in the note and summarised on the graphic. #PlasticsTreaty #INC4 #WasteManagement

EuRIC, the voice of Europe's recycling industries has joined forces with FEAD - European Waste Management Association, MUNICIPAL WASTE EUROPE and CEWEP to warn against extending the revision of the Waste Framework Directive (#WFD) beyond the targeted scope proposed by the European Commission. 🚨 Instead of extending the #WFD revision, we request its completion before the end of the mandate, taking into account the preparatory work done by the Commission, including impact assessments and public consultations. Today we're launching our #PPWR campaign highlighting the #EUHospitality's priorities in the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation negotiations. Since the European Commission's proposal was published, we adopted a pragmatic approach based on our industry's commitment to a low-carbon economy and willingness to make a difference. We call for the coexistence of both single-use and reuse systems in #PPWR because establishments composing our industry are heterogeneous, whether in their location, customers' profile, the offer of services, waste management patterns or recycling models. Our Director of Services, Dr Anna Scott, has been nominated for the Resource Hot 100 for her work moving people beyond just recycling to waste prevention. Most people are not extensively engaged in waste prevention behaviours and think that recycling is the best thing they can do to reduce the environmental impact of the things they buy. Designing better, insight-led communications, that increase understanding of waste prevention, is an essential part of encouraging the uptake of these behaviours. Earlier this year, and led by Anna, we published 'A Guide to Improving Public Understanding of Waste Prevention' - research which explored how to communicate with people effectively about waste prevention to help move them up the waste hierarchy.
