How do you know when to go on a second date?
I have had a number of conversations across the last week, which have involved something being ‘unique’.
Perhaps the foundation has been rooted in TecFlos attendance at BrauBeviale. I take no credit for the humans, far more organised than I am who, to the most exacting of standards, have prepared us for our first exhibition at Europe’s largest trade event. When this is done it will be a ‘one of one’ for us and the question I will undoubtedly field will be ‘whether there will be a ‘second date’’.
Having supplied close to 20 million products and running at about c5000 a week - it is safe to say TecFlo is not a ‘one of one’ business. However, ironically everything we manufacture did begin life as a unique example and some of our most critical decisions have been made in a field of uncertainty – as we make decision to take something from a ‘one of one’ to a ‘one of many’.
The relationship in play between the field of precision and the field of uncertainty is a sport that the business has, over time, had to master. As engineers we harness technical skill, manufacturing behaviour, tools and procedures – giving us confidence that the desired outcome is consistent regardless of the frequency.
I don’t consider this as a unique feature of TecFlo – but it's safe to say that what is seen is only 1% of the conversations, considerations, plans and design concepts. There are in fact countless ‘one of ones’ across time.
I keep some ‘one of ones’ on my desk using them as a reminder that precision and uncertainty need to pair well in the relationship of running a business.
