For many, the issuance of the #CMMC #finalrule was a relief. Yet, it’s easy to forget how close we came to inaction. I often joke there must be someone at #DODCIO who’s fueled by a picture of an #F35/J-20, motivating him with rage to ensure adversaries can't reverse-engineer American ingenuity from unclassified bits ever again. So, I was dismayed to learn that the plan allows foreign #C3PAOs and #CCAs to audit members of the American #DIB. While I have no doubt that international companies could perform well, my concerns are threefold: Ownership and Enforcement: We will lack visibility on ownership of and influence on of auditing firms. Abroad seemingly legitimate company could easily become a front for adversaries, and even if we uncover this, we would struggle to address the damage. Understanding of Alliances: Alliances are complex and frequently even among our most trusted it can be difficult to find common ground. For instance, two #NATO allies with close ties to Russia might still have CCAs and C3PAOs working on American DIB members. I have not seen how either the #CyberAB or #DoD intend to address the issue. Cost Competition: Foreign competition will certainly offer lower prices which may drive down costs. Naturally smaller members of the DIB - those most sensitive to cost - will seek out those options. Conversely, smaller financially strapped firms may also be most risk for exploitation by an adversary. Finally, there's no reciprocation; there's no equivalent to CMMC among our allies. Even if there were, the value seems limited. For example, Canadian C3PAOs could access over 200,000 American DIB companies while Canada has only about 700 DIB firms - most of whom are Canadian subsidiaries of American companies in the first place! Ultimately, if CMMC aims to protect #FCI and #CUI from adversaries, making it easier for them to understand our systems undermines that goal.

ASTME541 Or ICC/MBI 1205? Maybe Virginia is setting the best path to follow, they have adopted ICC/MBI 1200 and 1205 and ASTME541 is listed in Virginia’s state regulations and will supersede incorporated standards if there are differing requirements. https://lnkd.in/gTrWfCMu
