Imagine if you had a dream......but that dream became impossible because of lack of FOOTWEAR?!? My dream is to climb Mt Everest - I am on a path to doing just that. It is not fear, or money or time availability holding me back. The ONE THING holding me back? No 8000m mountaineering boots available in my size. La Sportiva and SCARPA and other 8000m mountaineering boots manufacturers DO NOT have my size available...not anywhere. I'm a size 37.5 EUR (6.5 USA) but in mountaineering boots I wear a 38.5 Eur size (7.5 size USA). Women mountaineers have to wear Men's boots for 7000m and 8000m mountaineering but it has become impossible to get 8000m boots in 38.5 size - either they don't make them or they are on perpetual backorder with no future availability in sight. I searched for 8000m boots last fall for my Aconcagua expedition to no avail - same problem as this time around. I have Raynauds - a condition which makes my hands and feet prone to cold injuries and I knew I needed 8000m boots to continue on my path to Everest. I have reached out to several of the 8000m mountaineering boot manufacturers last fall and this fall - didn't even receive a response back. I am beyond excited to climb Manaslu - an 8000+m peak - in September 2025 on my journey towards Everest. I will be devastated if LACK OF FOOTWEAR is the reason that my dream and this expedition does not happen. I am hopeful that one of the 8000m mountaineering boot manufacturers can help me resolve this and get 38.5 size boots so I can chase my dreams to climb Manaslu and Everest. We want and need MORE WOMEN in HIGH ALTITUDE MOUNTAINEERING. Post-Marathon Reflections: The Challenges of Downhill Running with Barefoot Style Footwear ------------------- As I look back on my latest marathon, I realise the aspects that affected my race most significantly. Downhill running with barefoot style footwear can be particularly punishing on the feet, especially when you let your legs go too much. The blisters and bruising I experienced on the soles of my feet pushed me to rethink my strategy and running technique. Once these injuries set in, I struggled mightily to control my speed downhill, leading to further strain on my quads. Despite these obstacles and the rawness of the experience, I take great pride in not quitting. At the halfway point, the thought of continuing seemed insurmountable. However, coming to terms with not reaching my initial time goal allowed me to focus on simply finishing the race and limiting any further damage. Now, the focus shifts to recovery. Today, I'm unsure how I will be able to run, but I'm determined to strap up my feet and give it my best shot. The experience has given me valuable insights that I can carry forward. I ran a half marathon this weekend. And it made me a better running shoe designer. Know your market. The classic rule of business school also applies to design. As a runner and running shoe designer I live all things running. When I'm not designing running shoes I'm hanging out at running shoe shops. When I'm not running, it's speaking to runners. But you can't beat racing for really seeing the market in action. There's lots of runners who never race. But for those who do, race day is sacred. And watching thousands of runners go through their pre-race rituals is enlightening. Seeing runners change in their car from training shoes to their race day shoes with reverence shows the power aspirational performance we have the ability to design into product. Seeing runners of all paces wear the same shoes as elites and Olympians shows us who we are really designing for. Performance running shoes can be heightened by marketing and bolstered by world record performances, but what shoes runners will race in tells you everything. Race day shoes are “the chosen ones”. You can’t design running shoes without knowing running.
