"The necessity and consequences of the exponential growth in tourism activity experienced throughout the world over the past half-century have been increasingly questioned by an expanding body of activists and critical researchers. One of the emerging responses within this debate concerns calls for reversing the trend in pursuit of touristic ‘degrowth’. This discussion has been inspired by a longstanding body of research problematizing the imperative and consequences of economic growth more generally, initiated by natural and social scientists. This article offers a state-of-the-art overview of the application of degrowth perspectives to discussions of (sustainable) tourism development and outlines a future agenda for research and praxis continuing this important line of inquiry." (Murray et al., 2023)

Rural tourism as a way to combat the desertification of the interior, creating jobs and the consequent fixation of the populations in Portugal. Tourism development supported by sustainability and local involvement. Thus removing the antagonism of the resident populations that is beginning to be felt.

RISKS ON THE TOURISM AGENDA Understanding and managing risks, including "natural hazards" post-Whakaari White Island, is a key theme at this year's University of Otago Tourism Policy School in Queenstown. Sustainable and resilient tourism is an underlying theme, with challenges and opportunities ahead in a context of uncertainty. Potential massive increases in visitors and services to support them bring their risks and exacerbated others, and make our economy more vulnerable to future shocks to tourism and more widely. https://lnkd.in/gX8Hwjy2

Tourism rethink needs to come from the top down – and the bottom up

Tourism is about experience! By 2033, travel and tourism is set to become a $15.5 trillion industry—accounting for more than 11.6% of the global economy. Once viewed as a leisure pursuit, tourism has transcended its recreational roots to become a potent force shaping the global economic landscape. Destinations are increasingly recognized as investment hubs, job creators, and engines of growth. Yet, as with any transformative force, vacationomics presents a compelling duality. While it unlocks immense potential, it also necessitates careful navigation. Tourism has the transformative potential to create a lasting, positive impact on local/regional economies, cities, communities, and ecosystems. However, this crucially depends on the development of essential infrastructure, local services, and skills, along with the safeguarding and promotion of natural and cultural heritage.
